Does the size of the baby relate to the amount of weight that you put on during pregnancy?

(27 Posts)
I'm getting a bit concerned here, as I only put on 1 and a half stone with DD and she was still a bit of a porker and OP and got stuck during delivery (). During that pregnancy I didn't want to eat for two trimesters because I was feeling so sick, and was actually told off by my doctor at one point for not gaining weight, who assumed that I was doing it on purpose!
This time around, I have morning sickness, but eating processed food seems to make it better - anything with loads of carbohydrate, and some sugar or salt. So I don't think that I will get away with such a small weight gain. Does this mean that the new DB will be even bigger? I'm really scared about delivering an even bigger baby.

I gained 4 stone, DS was 10 lbs 2 oz. Haven't a clue if the two were related. I ate pretty sensibly until the last 6-8 weeks of my pregnancy and then I was starving all the time and ate for two.

MrsT dd1 was a VB using high forceps - NOT recommended and dd2 was a EMCS after 29hrs of trying for VB - goodness only knows what this one will be lol

There has been a study that showed women who followed a Low GI diet had significantly lower incidence of large babies. And that was certainly my experience over 3 pregnancies.

This question is one I have always wondered myself! Ds was born at 9lb 12 and I gained around 4 stone. I was only a size 8-10 so a big change for me!
I think most of my trouble was lack of excerise - I didn't want to leave the house in last couple of months as I was too scared! Also my usually active job turned inot a desk job, sitting down all day. I also stopped walking to work and getting the bus.
I had a c section with ds because he was an undiagnosed breech -I had no idea of his large size either, the midwife had no concerns.
We are now trying for number 2 and I am vowing to keep more active this time.
As fro the comment on 'big' babies running in the family, I am not sure really - I was 6lb something and dh was 7lb something, no history of 'big' babies.

8lb 2oz. So bigger than average, but not huge - until you compare her with the size of me.

I was also a porker (bigger than DD, but then my Mum is also bigger; I follow my Dad's family). My Mum's next baby was smaller though. Is it too much to hope that I'll follow the same pattern?

[shock} at dizzychickies. Did you have a VB or CS? Much respect either way, actually, as just carrying them around can't have been an easy job.
No - I put on just over a stone with dd and she was 9lbs (which also bore no resemblance to the weight of my mother's babies).

Second babies are usually bigger than first though. Anyone know why that is?

How heavy was your dd MrsTittleMouse?

Links The simplest way to insert a link is to enter the link itself, surrounded by [[ and ]]. So if you type [[www.mumsnet.com]], the link will display as http://www.mumsnet.com. If you want your link to display text other than the web address itself, leave a space after the address then add the text before the ]]. So "Look at [[www.mumsnet.com this page]]", would display "Look at this page".
