Does the size of the baby relate to the amount of weight that you put on during pregnancy?

I'm getting a bit concerned here, as I only put on 1 and a half stone with DD and she was still a bit of a porker and OP and got stuck during delivery (). During that pregnancy I didn't want to eat for two trimesters because I was feeling so sick, and was actually told off by my doctor at one point for not gaining weight, who assumed that I was doing it on purpose!
This time around, I have morning sickness, but eating processed food seems to make it better - anything with loads of carbohydrate, and some sugar or salt. So I don't think that I will get away with such a small weight gain. Does this mean that the new DB will be even bigger? I'm really scared about delivering an even bigger baby.

no it does not mean anything. usually the size of yuor baby is determined by the sizes of your mothers babies. if you eat too much it jsut means that you store more fat and that you will be bigger than before you were pregnant so more weight to lose after birth. there are things that can lead to beg babies such as gestational diabetes.

i too am in first trimester and can only stomach starchy foods thus gaining pounds already but once into second trimester and mornign sicknes has gone i am going to eat healthy. you could do the same.

if you go on internet it tells you how much of the weight gain is baby, placenta, extra blood, and fat for milk etc.

MrsEasterEggHead Thu 20-Mar-08 11:47:46

like you i could only stomache processed foods, and in particular carbohydrates and fatty sugary stuff for the entirety of my last preg and i out 4 stone on - dd was only 7lbs tho, so i would say that no it isnt related

MrsTittleMouse Thu 20-Mar-08 11:50:19

I actually posted that info on a couple of threads a while ago. Sadly in my second trimester last time I felt as grim as I did in my first. Oh boy, I hope that it will be easier this time with a toddler in tow. It's bad enough now, trying to snack sneakily so that she doesn't see me eating things that I really don't want her to eat. grin

Niecie Thu 20-Mar-08 11:51:20

No - DS1 6lb 10oz - I put on 16lbs. Born on his due date

DS2 - 9lb - I put on 18lbs. Born 6 days early.

So one big baby and one small.

MrsEasterEggHead Thu 20-Mar-08 11:57:07

mrstittlemouse - yep i know that feeling, i keep eating chocs and having to sneakily eat them in the kitchen but dd is so on the ball "mummy, what are you eating? i want some" from 2 rooms away lol

MrsTittleMouse Thu 20-Mar-08 12:01:46

My most embarrassing craving is ready meals - I think it's because the more I see and handle food, the less I want it. Anything with pasta, or cottage pie with mashed potato.

I'm am so glad that everyone agrees that I'm not necessarily going to have a huge baby. A huge me I can cope with - I'd rather not, but if I need to eat to keep going with DD, I'm going to eat.

MrsEasterEggHead Thu 20-Mar-08 12:56:48

oh god yeah i cant stop eating tuna pasta bake ready meals and i feel so bad about it, esp as your meant to limit your tuna! but i spend an hour making dinner and then i dont want to eat it if ive made it! and dh cant even prepare beans on toast without disaster! x

IdrisTheDragon Thu 20-Mar-08 12:57:54

I put on 4.5 stone with both DS and DD - DS weighed 6lb 1oz and DD was 7lb 11oz

artichokes Thu 20-Mar-08 12:59:56

I gained 4.5 stone shock and DD was 9lbs 4oz (ow). I too turned to carbs and take aways to curb sickness.

If I am lucky enough to get pregnant again I swear I will eat steamed veg and fish all every meal wink.

Iput on around 5 stone with dd1-7lb9oz
1 stone with dd2-6.7lb
18lbs with dd3-8lb11oz!

Alishanty Thu 20-Mar-08 13:12:38

I don't think what you eat affects the babies size, just your own but bear in mind that subsequent babies tend to be bigger than the last. Don't know if it because the womb has 'stretched' from the last one so they have more room.

camillathechicken Thu 20-Mar-08 13:17:35

nope, it does not mean anything

even if you starve yourself, your baby will take all it needs from you, and you will feel ill and your baby will be fine!

size of baby is only one factor in delivery

TreeHuggerMum1 Thu 20-Mar-08 13:19:49

I put on over 3 stone and went 10 days late and my LO was only 6 lb 14 oz.
My big sis gained 5 stone and her LO was 7 lb 12 oz.
Don't think it means anything.

MrsTittleMouse Thu 20-Mar-08 13:20:01

Just as well, as when I was pregnant with poor DD I ate so little at all, and almost nothing of the wonderful healthy food that I'd eaten when TTC. And she was still huge! According to the MW, her size was a significant contributing factor to the bad delivery (but not the only one, obviously).

TreeHuggerMum1 Thu 20-Mar-08 13:20:35

PS the comment on stretchy wombs freaks me out... Maybe I won't have anymore then.

dizzychixies Thu 20-Mar-08 13:26:21

dd1 - put on 4.5stone and she weighed in at 10lb4oz
dd2 - put in 19lbs and she was 11lb1oz

go figure hmm

No - I put on just over a stone with dd and she was 9lbs (which also bore no resemblance to the weight of my mother's babies).

Second babies are usually bigger than first though. Anyone know why that is?

How heavy was your dd MrsTittleMouse?

MrsTittleMouse Thu 20-Mar-08 13:40:51

8lb 2oz. So bigger than average, but not huge - until you compare her with the size of me.

I was also a porker (bigger than DD, but then my Mum is also bigger; I follow my Dad's family). My Mum's next baby was smaller though. Is it too much to hope that I'll follow the same pattern?

[shock} at dizzychickies. Did you have a VB or CS? Much respect either way, actually, as just carrying them around can't have been an easy job.

mumfor1standfinaltime Thu 20-Mar-08 14:35:10

This question is one I have always wondered myself! Ds was born at 9lb 12 and I gained around 4 stone. I was only a size 8-10 so a big change for me!
I think most of my trouble was lack of excerise - I didn't want to leave the house in last couple of months as I was too scared! Also my usually active job turned inot a desk job, sitting down all day. I also stopped walking to work and getting the bus.
I had a c section with ds because he was an undiagnosed breech -I had no idea of his large size either, the midwife had no concerns.
We are now trying for number 2 and I am vowing to keep more active this time.
As fro the comment on 'big' babies running in the family, I am not sure really - I was 6lb something and dh was 7lb something, no history of 'big' babies.

BrummieOnTheRun Thu 20-Mar-08 16:35:37

There has been a study that showed women who followed a Low GI diet had significantly lower incidence of large babies. And that was certainly my experience over 3 pregnancies.

dizzychixies Thu 20-Mar-08 18:43:46

MrsT dd1 was a VB using high forceps - NOT recommended and dd2 was a EMCS after 29hrs of trying for VB - goodness only knows what this one will be lol

am I too late for the Low GI diet, am 21+3 with dc3!!!

MrsMattie Thu 20-Mar-08 18:46:40

I gained 4 stone, DS was 10 lbs 2 oz. Haven't a clue if the two were related. I ate pretty sensibly until the last 6-8 weeks of my pregnancy and then I was starving all the time and ate for two.

Piccalilli2 Thu 20-Mar-08 18:47:44

I put on over 4 stone with dd and she was 14 days late and only 7 lb 8.

allgonebellyup Thu 20-Mar-08 18:49:24

no, i had the skinniest body with a huge bump, only put on a stone, and the baby was 10lb!
size 8 again the next day. (brag)
