decorating nurseries - any suggestions

Hi

dh and I are planning on decorating the nursery. We have decided on a colour theme of yellow either 2 tones or another contrasting colour(grey or green anyone), (don't fancy blue/pink even if we did know what we were having) and we both really like a barnyard theme chickens ducks etc but not sure really where to buy transfers or kids borders from. I have been to B&Q and range was pretty limited and don't live near any other big home base places as based in Hackney with no car so has to be public transport accessible.

Any suggestions? Happy to buy online but looks quite expensive. We are not very arty so would need to be pretty simple to do.

DH would love it to be green and gold (hes an aussie) but not sure how we could manage this without it looking too garish can yellow and green look nice together???
Also any ideas on essential stuff to buy in advance apart from a cot?

Well you can by stickers these days from most places - I got mine from Next. Just do a Google search and I am sure loads will come up and you will be able to buy online. If you were going to go for a farm yard scene, light greeen and light yellow would look nice - you could always paint a little bloke working the yard dressed in the gold and green colours! hee hee

I highly recommend the books by Judith Wilson Babies' Rooms, Children's Spaces, Family Living and Teen Zone. You might want to start off with just Babies' Rooms - I think you can get it in paperback - buy it, you'll save yourself expensive mistakes.

We did green 'hills' and blue 'sky' on DS's wall then got various animal/insect stencils and did a mural all round.

thank you all so much for all your suggestions I will certainly look at the links and the ebay items. I am getting quite excited about it all now although when it comes to painting hopefully dh will do most of that

Hi just checked out the links to ebay they all look great thanks and the stencil links are cool too I think dh would rather like the robots stencil for our room . I think buying a freeze we can stick on would be best for us though as we have decided to paint the bottom third of the room in one colour probably a nice muted shade of green not too dark and the top third in a summery yellow and knowing our painting skills will need something to cover up the inevitable dodgy line between the 2 colours. The stencils could be used on furniture though to brighten it up. There are loads of great ideas will have to check the book out too on the weekend

We have ordered something for our babies room from this site I thought they were a bit different and are apparently very easy to put up and can be re-used!!!

we are finally on the way with the decorating. DH has been working away all day on the first coat and so far we are both really pleased with the results of bottom 1/3 green and top 2/3rds of the room yellow. We chose Willow green and Lemon zest in Matt emulsion from Fads premium range and this seems to be working a treat. I have ordered the farm borders went for a pack of 2 borders with matching wall stickers it was cleaper than buying them separately from one of those ebay shops 140152183035 (if you want a look). I just need to sort out some curtains, and then furniture. We still have 5 months to go so plenty of time to get it all sorted I think.

so thanks again everyone for all the advice its much appreciated.

A book I have found quite useful to read is the Which Baby Products I found a copy in my local oxfam and its only from 2004 so not that old and covers everything to do with what to buy pros and cons etc but makes no judgement on what you choose. just enough to make to think about what you really need and what you just fancy cause it looks cute.
