Can you 'self refer' for a dating scan and/or a 12 week scan?

I went to GP today expecting to get a dating scan because I had 4 negative tests over the last month, then a positive but my LMP was 30th September making me 11 weeks, but I don't think I am. He said they would check the dates at the 12 week scan (which should be next week roughly) but they won't send me until I have seen the midwife - January 7th when I am over 14 weeks then who knows how long until I get a scan. Can I just call the hospital and get a scan myself?
Thanks.

I was abroad when I found out I was 6 weeks pregnant, and not due back to uk till 15 weeks pregnancy. I found out which day the midwife would be in the surgery and spoke to her on the phone. She just took all my 'booking-in' details and then forwarded it to the hospital so they could send me a scan date. I flew back to the UK just for the day so I could have the scan.
Any chance of discussing it directly with your midwife on the phone? In our area, you can also contact a midwife on a 'medicom' number, but I don't know if that's just around here.
I guess the only problem you might have in bringing the scan forward is the possibility that the antenatal clinic will be fully booked, and that it will be closed on certain days over Christmas.
Anyway, it's definitely worth a try. Good luck.

Just to say, if you want a nuchal scan you have to do this between 11-13 weeks, so if you are 14 weeks in Jan then it will be too late. It is also late for a dating scan I think, they are best done by around 12 weeks too as the growth rate of the baby after that start to vary a bit more. Not all NHS authorities offer a nuchal scan. So...try speaking to MW but you may have to get a private scan done, whether nuchal and/or dating, before xmas.

I don't think you'll be able to call up and get a scan yourself. You may prefer to go private which is something you can do, but then obviously you'll be paying. I had private scans on both my pregnancies and when I phoned was given appointments for the next day so it's unlikely they'll be a long wait. Good luck!

Call the midwife yourself and explain. NHS guidelines say scan should be offered between 10-13 weeks - see the NICE website, think it is www.nice.org, look up antenatal care. Or, as suggested, pay privately.
