Clexane - can I inject into my leg?

In previous pregnancies I have injected clexane into both my leg and stomach. I read the leaflet this time, and it says that you should inject into the stomach. I am starting to bruise quite alot and wondered whether it is ok to inject into the leg too, or has advice changed since I was last pregnant?

I don't know when you were last pregnant but standard practice used to be to inject into the arm - however as i understand it some research showed that the clexane was more effective when given into the stomach. It s a difficult one, but ultimately your choice, if patients object we will still give in the arm as long as they understand it is of reduced effectiveness. HTH.

I was advised to do my postpartum clexane only in my thighs...

Hi there

I'm getting injected into my upper thighs and it's working fine. DH is doing the jabbing and he's managed to stop the bruising almost completely - think it's got something to do with going in at an angle rather than 90 degrees.

I was told I could do it in the stomach if I wanted but it feels a bit strange as the belly gets bigger and tighter so I'm sticking to legs.

Have you tried Arnica cream for the bruising, this seems to be working well for me.

All the best

hmm, differing opinions then

I will probably continue with my stomach at the moment (there is lots of spare fleshe there at the moment ), but may more onto thighs in a few weeks.

Thanks for the tip about the arnica - I will definitely try that.

it is best to inject into the tummy as its absorbed better..try not to rub the area after injecting as this will increase bruising

Hello know how you feel, I inject daily too. I'm 36 weeks pregnant and am still injecting into my tummy. I guess I just feel happier continuing with what I am now used to. I was told thighs were fine too but agree that the instructions assume it'll be your tummy

The research has only been done in the past few years and indeed, not all areas have adopted it. Injecting into the tummy is now considered 'best practice'.
