Pregnancy

11.3wks, bp 140/80 - too high?

Hi all. Am starting a new thread as I've got a general question about pregnancy blood pressure. So far it has been fine and I've never had problems with blood pressure in the past. Yesterday though I went for a scan having lost a clot of blood and although baby is fine (relief), bp was 140/80 - isn't that a little high? The nurse just said, it's a bit high, you're a bit nervous aren't you (knew why I was there) and that was it - the doctor (wasn't my usual one) didn't comment. Now I'm not especially worried but I'm not due at the doc's again for 3 weeks or so and was wondering whether I should be monitoring it in the meantime. Is it true that raised bp leads to the baby getting less oxygen? Can anyone help? Thanks!

tp number is slightly high but that is associated with nerves etc

bottom number is ok...and thats the one to worry about if it is not

As far as I'm aware, blood pressure needs to be measured against your "normal" blood pressure - i.e. the first taken probably by midwife when you had your first check-up. If it's within 20 of that measurement, it's fine.
They also call first blood pressure readings white-coat readings as people's blood pressure does tend to be higher when in a hospital / doctor's surgery environment.
It sounds very normal to me and I can't see why it would have any effect on baby.
You worrying is what you need to sort out!

As a general rule, if bottom number is over 100, it's a concern.

or more than 20 above your initial reading.....

try not to worry too much

When I am preggers my BP is 90/60 and my dr jokes and asks if I am alive. It is all about context and what is normal for you. My DH gets high blood pressure readings every time a dr measures it but at home if he takes it it is fine - just nerves.

IIRC they are usually more interested in the lower number. 80 isn't bad at all. I was referred for high blood-pressure during my first pregnancy. Mine went up to about 150/110 instead of my usual 110/75ish.

i would LOVE bp as low as 80 being the bottom number!

Wow, so many answers already, thank you!
Initial reading was 110/60, the one at my scheduled scan last week was 120/80.

Thank you for the reassurances! Popsycal, hope bp drops and things go well.

Sounds fine - 140 is a bit high, but my mw said they only really start worrying if the bottom number heads toward 100, or if it's a lot over your base line reading taken at your booking appointment.
