Have I got SPD? ...and what exactly is it?!?

Hello

I have this pain in my upper and inner thigh and kind of generally in my "undercarriage" and a bit in my lower abdomen. I've had it since last night and I'm having huge difficulty getting up and down and then walking, though seems to ease if I walk for a while.

It's not like labour pain (second preg, am 29+5 weeks), kind of more like a pulled muscle, but it's both sides.

I'm carrying a huge baby (all sorts of old ladies stopping me in the street to tell me so!!! ), so wondering if it's just the weight???

But just read a bit about SPD and wondered whether I have that??

I really don't know anything about it, so if you have any experience of it, I'd be grateful for some advice.

Thanks,

I had SPD in each pregnancy. Worse second time round tho - infact still suffering at times.

I'm definately no expert but sounds to me like you might have it. When are you next at your midwife?

sounds like could be it.Poor you!
Quite a few posts here, you can do a search.
There is very good leaflet on SPD (for some reason now called girddle pain or smthg like that)
Google "pelvic partnership" and you should find it.
In the meantime, put your feet up and keep your legs strictly parallel!

Great thank you.

Have found that website. Very useful and does sound like I have that.

Is it a constant thing or does it vary? Does anything help it go away? Swimming for example? (I've just started my maternity leave so was planning on swimming - and generally swanning about of course!!!)

Seeing midwife on 19th for yet another scan of my enormous child (!!), but I do have a really good osteo who does alot of cranial so might go and see her this week??

Conkey,
Mine was really bad- sorry, that prob not what you want to hear! I was given a very attractive support belt thing, sent to physio who couldnt do anythign anyway as i was pg and ended up with crutches to try and make walking easier...and possible! However once i hit about 36 weeks, the discomfort kind of eased, which is weird and unexpected given the huge bump i had by then!
My only tip - if you havent already got one buy a memory foam mattress! Night times, for me, were sooo very uncomfortable, and i should have followed the advice of others and got a new/decent mattress.

With DS1 hit me about 18 weeks. was signed off 2 weeks about 22-24 weeks 'cause woke up one morning and couldn't walk. After 2 weeks in bed was much better and back to work but too much walking and pain was back full swing.

This tim had 1st twinges at 12 weeks, quite bad and I'm taking it VERY easy.
I find standing excrutiating at times. Walking is better. Lying down with feet parallel and propped up or on side with bolster between legs best.

If you swim NO BREASTROKE. Keep legs parallel.
No squatting, no side splits or anything else that opens up pelvis.
Tell your midwife and have them write it clearly in your birthplan (NO STIRRUPS). I found kneeling and hugging birthball or lying sideways is best.

ooh lordy!! Well I'm sorry to hear you all had a bad time of it!

I'm kind of relieved I'm not having the baby early as I was worried a bit, but knew the pains weren't quite right. It all sounds horrid.

Esp as I have a 4 yr old doing xmas shows this week, and end of school stuff a DP starting a new job and we're moving house! ooh and there's that xmas thing too! Bugger.

Oh well, hopefully if it stays like this I can cope. I might give swimming a miss as a bit crap anyway and can only swim breastroke!! My osteo is a bit of a witch so hopefully she can help.

At least I'm on leave now; I might try half a bottle of vodka and half a pack of nurofen - won't hurt the baby!!! ........will it!?!?

oh - and I'm already due for an elective, so won't have to worry about stirrups!

UGH, well this baby better be nice is all I can say!

Thanks for all lovely advice, what would we do without mumsnet!
x

I had it last time and got it again now (29 weeks). Get a fembrace (belt with a codpiece) from your physio, midwife should refer you, they do help if you wear them all day but the downside is it does make you want to wee even more. Support tights help a bit too. Pillow between legs to sleep. And try to keep your knees together as much as possible...if only I'd done that 29 weeks ago!
