Cyclizine ...

Can anyone who has taken Cyclizine please answer some questions for me ...

Namely, I've been taking tablets at random - maybe one tablet then a few days break before taking another. First time I took a tablet I got a few hours of blissful relief but since then it hasn't taken the nausea away. It might be dampening the symptoms but who knows. Yesterday i took 2 (one lunchtime, one tea-time) ... felt okay during the afternoon but still felt like death warmed up after the evening tablet.

So ... do they have a cumulative effect or when I see my consultant next week should I ask for something else given that 95% of the time I feel they're not taking the sickness away.

Advice much appreciated! (11 weeks btw)

They do have a cumulative effect. I was told to regularly take them - 3 a day and I could have one in the night too if unable to sleep through nausea. Dr said it was no good taking them as and when as I had to rely on the constant, cumulative effect, so get taking tablets by the clock!
That said they only stopped me being sick, did nothing for the constant nausea.
Good Luck with the nausea - you can still hope it will wear off soon!

Thanks ksld ... I got mine with the orders not to take them unless I was really in a bad way - so of course, no matter how bad I feel I worry they'll harm the pregnancy and try not to take them. It's funny they didn't stop your nausea - I thought that's what they were primarily for. I shall try taking them more regularly for the next few days and see what the effect is before I see Dr on Friday. Thanks again.

They are anti-emitics (sp?) which basically means that they stop you throwing up- but not feeling nauseous.

For me, if I'm going to both feel sick and throw up I'd rather have relief from the feeling, I can cope (to a resonable degree) with the throwing

good luck

Same as the others - mostly stopped the vomiting, but not the nausea. I took cyclizine regularly for about six weeks durint two pregnancies and everything was fine with the babies - I think any risk is really, really tiny.

I took it for about 2 months. I was told every 8 hours, and prescribed metaclopramide as well and a third drug to stop the vomiting and nausea.

The vomiting stopped, but nothing could get rid of the feeling of nausea.

Oh balderdash ... the nausea is killing me. Groan. Still, I'll give them a go later in the week, if not before, have already been throwing up this morning and now need to summon energy to go to shop for messages - will it ever end.

Sorry to hear you are feeling so rank millie.

Have you tried the hyper-emesis support site - blooming awful

I used to take the pill about half an hour before going out, so that at least I had window in which I could be pretty sure that I would not be sick, even if I still felt horribly nauseous.

I know the last thing you want to do it eat, but... please try little and often. Try really small portions of things so that it doesn't seem too daunting. Start off with simple carbs as they are easy to digest (plain pasta always made me feel a bit better, teacakes, muffins, plain crisps, cucumber sandwiches, apples, muller rice yougurts, plain noodles) and then move on to whatever plain protein you can stand (chicken used to do it for me).

Eating was the only thing that made any dents in my nausea.

Thanks Policywonk ... at the moment I'm living on biscuits and potatoes and am so sick of toast (and being sick after eating it) that I simply never want to see it or smell it again!

I tried acupuncture last night ... don't know if it was the acupuncture (hadn't been to this girl before), the 36 mile round trip or coincidence but I was horribly sick afterwards

Peachy posted a link to that site some weeks ago but thank you for reposting it ... I've been meaning to go back and have another look at it.

Thanks

Hi there

Just a quick post while the lunch cools down.

I was on Cyclizine by injection for the whole duration on both my pregancies. It reduced my sickness, but not the nausea, in fact the only thing that reduced the nausea was being asleep and whilst I was having accupuncture.

The tablets did not work for me, as I was vomitting before they could take effect, I also had bucastem, steriods and most of the others. Good luck

That site's great Policywonk - I must have been on the US site before. Thank you.

Thanks TheMadHouse ... I hope the acupuncture will have some effect for me. I was so disappointed when I was sick last night - and it was horrible acid too so left my throat on fire for ages - UGH!

Urgh, it is so horrid. I remember my DP burning some toast early on in my second pregnancy and I had to leave home for a couple of days until the smell had died down.

Peachy is the source of all knowledge about hyper-emesis on MN - I think she used to work for that site. Glad it has been of some use. I think the emotional aspect of sickness/nausea can be hard to understand for those who haven't been through it - I know I spent a lot of my pregnancies just lying on the sofa sobbing (feel a bit silly about it in retrospect, but at the time I think I was actually a bit depressed - I'd never been properly ill before and it's a bit of a shock when it happens).
