Babys heartbeat+gender!

Hi Girls,
Just wondering if anyone believes in the oldwives tale about the babys heartbeat being below 140 for a boy and above for a girl, I'm at 142 so thinking it could be a girl now but the baby was active at the time!!! What dya think??

I was wondering about this myself a while back and got to thinking that the babies heart rate must change as it grows. As in, very tiny creatures have very fast heart rates - compare a mouse to a cat or something! So the heart rate early on in pregnancy would surely be faster than the heart rate towards the end?
I have to say, this is based on no scientific knowledge whatsoever on my part!! But it makes sense doesn't it?
dkay, how many weeks are you?

I'm 27 wks now, 6 wks ago the hearbeat was 140 and now it's at 142, it would be interesting to know from those that know the gender though wouldn't it?

It was right for all of mine - DS, DD and now DS2. My midwife at the time of DS1 and DD
did say that it was an old wives tale, but....

I have twins (one of each) and they had consistantly different rates, I think the boy was about 120 and the girl nearer 140 -

Just asked the doctor at my antenatal appointment this morning. Had 126 bpm so therefore a boy . Was told very firmly this was nonsense though and depended how active the baby was at the time, whether asleep or not, what I had just eaten etc etc etc.....

DS's heartbeat was always abive 140, DD's was always below 140 .

All of my 3 were 135-145 all the way through preg - although during labour my ds's dropped to 130 and dd's (2) stayed above 140 - seems vaguely sensible theory.

feedmenow · 02/10/2007 15:48

dkay, I reckon this theory is probably fine for a bit of fun (along with ring-dangling!, but I wouldn't bank on it being right!
Although I am only 16 weeks soperhaps I have time to do an experiement!! Will measure the heart rate once a week and keep a note of it to see if it changes as the bubba grows, and to see if it predicts the gender right!!!

well mine was 156 around 15-18 weeks...im 28 weeks now and its still above 140....usually 142-148......most people seem to think im having a boy...I think its a girl...but i dont know.......will see round dec!
my friend by the way is adamant its a girl though after hearing the HB...she has 2 DD and both were above 140 through pregnancy?
Good luck!
xx

Expecting a girl & her heart rate varied yesterday over the space of 30 mins on a monitor from 126 to 163 so bang goes that theory I'm afraid. It's been different at every appointment and more or less 50/50 above & below 140.

DD1 - 150+
DD2 - 150+

This baby has been constantly hovering around 140 and I know he is a boy!!

Mine started off girl-rate (147 and 148 every time) and now (I'm 36 weeks) down to 136 odd. What does that mean?!

DS1-138 to 142 all the way through
DS2-160 all the way through
Baby no 3, currently 150
Basically everyone expected DS2 to be a girl!

Well, as promised I timed the heartrate yesterday to start my little experiment.

16 weeks - 156bpm

Plan to check it every week, and also plan to find out the gender at 22 weeks.....

That's great feedmenow, looking forward to seeing what the gender is!

A friend of mine had her first DC abroad and was told confidently v. early on that it was a girl, based on the heartrate - correct.

She started her second pregancy while still there and the heart rate was exactly the same at exactly the same point. Therefore, assumed another girl.

Returned to UK and had the 20 week scan. It clearly showed that DC2 is a boy.

my babys heartrate has reached 180bpm but mostly stays under 140. what do you think?

Report
Pinkchampagne · 15/10/2007 17:38

When I was in labour with DS2, his heartbeat went up to 190 bpm, infact it was so high that they were starting to get a little concerned, and he is all boy!

Apparently heart rates are higher earlier in pregnancy.

Had a check up with the midwife today (23 weeks) and heart rate was 149. Baby is a boy but was quite active at the time which would raise the rate I guess.

Rozzy, thats one of the things I was wondeirng about earlier on on this thread. Makes sense that the heartrate would gradually slow as the baby grows..

But I am continuing with my experiement! About to check h/rate for this week....

Latest "reading" from Tuesday
