Very painful breasts and sore nipples during late pregnancy

This problem is driving me mad. I am 35 weeks pregnant with my first child. It has been a difficult pregnancy as I have severe diabetes and high blood pressure. Over the past week or so I've had very sore and tender breasts, similar to the pain I had in them in very early pregnancy. Is pain in the breasts common in late pregnancy? Also my nipples are almost constantly and very painfully erect. They become so erect that they develop white spots where even the blood can't flow. I know they are preparing themselves to do lots of feeding once my son is here, but is this a common problem? The pain I'm having with this is severe and I cannot seem to find out whether this is common in late pregnancy or not. Lots of info on pain in early pregnancy and while breast feeding, but not for this stage of pregnancy. Help!!!

I am experiencing most of the same symptoms and I am 37 weeks, I think it is your milk ducts preparing for breast feeding. I have had lumpy and tender breasts throughout my thoird trimester and I have had some colostrum too. Like you I am a first timer mum so perhaps see what the mums who have had children already say.
There are a few M/w on line too who could probably advise.
I would also talk to your M/w / GP as you sound a bit stressed about it. I don't know what the white spots are.

have you tried those gel filled breast coolers - stick them in the fridge and then pop inside your bra - soothing.

Thanks for the advice, and yes, I am getting a bit stressed about it. I have had a terrible pregnancy so far, in and out of hospital with various problems. I don't seem to have been well for the past 8 months and now my breasts are so sore and tender that I cannot wear a bra or have any sort of pressure near my chest. I had expected some breast pain, but nothing like this. I'm just getting very fed up.

Thanks again for your help.
