Has anyone had heavy bleeding in early pregnancy and the baby survived?

On Friday (at 7 + 5) I started bleeding heavily with clots and lumps. After internal exams I was told by the Dr I was having a miscarriage and this was confirmed by the EPU.

Today, I went in for my scan to check whether I needed a D&C and they found a "viable heartbeat" although the fluid sac is rather small.

I have spent the whole weekend coming to terms with a miscarriage and now everything is up in the air again.

I won't know until a further scan on Friday whether the baby is going to survive. AND I AM STILL BLEEDING???

Has anyone experienced this? Please help!

Sometimes this can happen when there is a twin pregnancy. Maybe you lost one baby and still have one.

In my first pregnancy I bled v. heavily with clots and enough blood to soak through my work clothes so I had to go home and get changed. I was about 6-7wks. I was convinced I'd miscarried as were the docs. The scan however showed a viable heartbeat...i went on to bleed for about a week. subsequent scans were fine. I was told it was possibly a twin pregnancy and I'd miscarried one twin. DS1 is a healthy almost 4yrold now.

I was wondering whether a twin pregnancy might have been possible. The doctor who did the scan refused to have any conversation about possibilities (I suppose because thats all they are) and just confirmed the heart beat and said it was still at risk. Relieved that there might be some hope. Thank you

Hi there
I bled very heavily in the early stages. I had a huge clot before I had to get on the plane for 12 hours to SA.
Got a scan the next morning and they didn't know if baby would make it. There was alot of blood around my baby. 3 weeks later had another scan and baby was fine.
Healthy 15month old now.
Good luck. I'll say a prayer for you and baby.

Yes, I actually passed a sac which I took to hospital and the Dr told me it was 'the sac'. I too, went for a scan to be told that there was a heartbeat. Maybe you were having twins. I was and I bled further. Bright red blood and loads of it. He is now nearly 4 and refusing to go to bed.

Thanks -

I also had 1/2 bottle of wine at the weekend to commiserate and stopped taking my pregnancy supplement - all not going to help the poor little thing survive. I couldn't tell the drs today as felt too guilty.

This drinking malarkey is a bit ott sometimes. Lots of women were out partying & getting drunk (and drugged these days) for weeks and weeks when they found out they were pg. In fact thats how a lot of people conceive. Please don't worry.

I bled at 7weeks and now I have a healthy 18mth old. Oh and also had a mad week in Greece at 5wks pg (I didn't know at the time) had many, many shots of vodka, followed by umpteen nurofen to try and combat a migraine!

i had big bleed at 10 weeks - whilst shopping felt wet looked down and was soaked in blood down to my knees, had another big bleed like that whilst waiting in A&E, was bright red, had to wait till the tues (it happened on the sat) and was convinced I'd had a miscarriage as I continued to have what looked like my period all weekend, there was a heartbeat and a pocket of blood next to the baby - they had no idea what caused it but after a few weeks the bleeding stopped and at 20 wk scan they said everything was fine, am now 23 weeks and baby kicking away - still worried but its been positive so far can't wait to get this baby safety into the world

good luck, thinking of you x

Hello, :)

With my daughter (who is almost three now) I found out I was pregnant at 5 weeks and had some brownish spotting on the day my period was due followed by another brownish/pink tinge in my cm (not heavy bleeding but definitely enough to notice, more brown than normal cm for sure) about 3 or 4 days after finding out. I also had an early scan but it was too early to find a heartbeat so they told me to come back the following week to check if she'd grown. I was working a very physical job at the time and was expecting the worst at the follow up but they we able to not only see she'd grown but also spotted her heartbeat at about 6+3.

I then went on to have another very noticeable bleed while at work when I was about 8 weeks and I thought for sure it was a bad sign and was even warned by doctors to "brace myself" (worst feeling ever) but another scan showed she was perfectly happy and comfortable. The bleeds pretty much stopped by the end of the first trimester but I had some spotting again at 20 weeks, so much so that I cancelled a holiday at the last minute thinking that with the number of bleeds I'd had the pregnancy just wasn't going well enough to travel.

Happily, my daughter is absolutely fine, born a healthy weight one day after her EDD and has grown into a wonderful, happy girl and meeting all of her milestones. I'm now expecting number 2 and have just had some cells removed from my cervix (before finding out I'm PG) and haven't had any notable bleeding and really hoping I don't this time as I know how terrifying it is.

I know it's terribly scary but try to stay positive as it is still entirely possible your bub will be absolutely fine, I was told later by a MW that bleeds during early pregnancy are a lot more common than you'd believe and don't necessarily always mean the worst. Keeping my fingers crossed for you, hope all is ok! :)

Aww thanks alot. Very assuring my bleed isabout the same time my period is due so just hoping my body is just still in cycle. Bleeding when pregnant is terrifying I think because of whats happened before I'm a bit terrified

Had bad cramps on Thursday, had a dark brown bleed. Increased through ought the day yesterday so went to A&E" they said my pregnancy hormone levels were high, but couldn't see if my cervix was open due to the blood collected in there. Going for a scan this morning. Now having what looks like my period. Blood (pink) and small clots. Feel slimmer and breasts not as tender. Wish me luck please. I so want this baby. I'm 8weeks today.

Good luck with your scan lotty2013. I'm currently 9 weeks with my second. I had a small bleed with my first at 8 weeks and everything was fine. Midwife didn't even want to see me, she just said its common when your period would have been due. I had a dream the other day I was going to have a bloody discharge (sorry tmi) and sure enough the next evening I had lots of brown tinged discharge. These first few weeks are incredibly difficult but fingers crossed we all get through them with happy healthy babies at the end of it.

Thank you. It is so hard! Terrifying when blood is there! I have quiet a bit, enough to fill a pad and period type pain. Small specks of hope left though. Scan is in 10mins, hope it's in there. Good luck Jess. I've had dreams too, weird how our bodies try and tell us what's coming! Keep me posted x
