Hi there,
Sorry don't know the answer as I didn't have a water birth and didn't use any pain relief during labour, but... having thought about your question, I'd say when it's time to push it's time to push, there isn't a lot of time for anything else, no matter what type of birth you choose...IMHO. Would be interested to see what the others (with real experience) say though.

Yes, because the G&A can slow everything down. I overdid it with DS1 and although it only took 2 or 3 pushes to get him out, it took ages because there were big gaps between them.

Soory, didn't read it properly - I didn't have a water birth, but I'd assume it would have been for the same reason.

I had gas and air taken away without a water birth, it can hinder the pushing...

I too was mightily upset as I quite liked it you know!

Kitten - so I am guessing if this is normal with non-water birth, then it would also apply with water birth...

No, they didn't take mine away! Not in either DS1 or 2's Land Births or DD's home Water Birth.

Kitten - should say well done without any additional drugs! How was the water birth?

I had pethadine, thought might as well, as they would not let me have a water birth as they needed to monitor dd .

told me that I could not have pethadine if I had a waterbirth as it makes you drowsy? So if you had it you may not have had the water birth.

i had the gas and air took away from me when pushing dd1 and 2 out (not water births) told i needed to focus on the pain to make me push

did say to dp that tthis time would like to just hold it as made me feel safe

i had G&A for both DD1 (water birth) and DD2 (came out so fast no time for water birth!!) and wild fecking horsed wouldn't have been able to prize the G&A from my mouth!!! - never told not to use it though - maybe a local policy thing where you are, or maybe my MW's just thought better of telling me to hand it over

they didn't with me, the pushing bit was the only time I used it, and only twice at that mind, good old water

Also maybe the gas and air is not compatible near water perhaps- if you are pushing and inhaling perhaps they worry you'll drop it in the water !!!???

maybe it depends on how well you are pushing.... i know that i pushed better when it was taken away...as i was so intent on breathing and using the G&A i was not concentrating on the pushing.....

When I was in labour (4 times) nobody would have been brave enough to come between me and my gas & Air loved the stuff [blsuh]

Probably depends a bit on how well you're pushing and a bit on the midwife - some may 'allow' you to keep using the G&A when pushing, others won't. As someone else said with the pethidine, you wouldn't have been allowed in the pool after pethidine, plus they would aim for it to have worn off before pushing anyway because otherwise it can depress the baby's breathing after the birth. Sounds like you did really well anyway, congratulations!

i didn't have a water birth but with ds. i did have a fight with the mw over the gas and air whilst pushing

i hadn't had any other pain relief and admitidly, i was completely overdoing it on the g&a, so much that my memories of it are like a surreal dream. she tried to take the mouthpiece away but i bit her and it, breaking the mouthpiece.

I was biting the mouthpiece so hard I couldnt loosen my jaw to remove it, even when the tube came off the end and I was getting nothing! LOL
