awful taste in mouth during pregnancy

Throughout my whole pregnancy with dd I had the most awful metalic taste in my mouth. It went away while I was eating but then came back 5 minutes after finishing. I spent most of the pregnancy sucking lemon drops. I am now 6 weeks pregnant and the same thing again. Does anyone have any advice on how I can get rid of it?

i think it's a symptom of iron deficiency

Thanks I'll look into it. I'm also incredibly tired - could that also be a symptom of iron deficiency?

I sympathise I had that each time. I used to eat satsumas all the time to try to get rid of it.

I didn't realise it was an iron deficiency that caused it but I did end up on iron tablets. You learn something new on Mumsnet every day.

I had this but my blood was constantly being checked and I wasn't iron deficient. Are there any other likely reasons?

I always had a metallic taste in my mouth in early pregnancy, it's how I knew I was pregnant 3rd time round. But I was never officially iron deficient, and they used to check that I think quite regularly.

I also had a weird taste pretty much throughout pregnancy and wasn't iron deficient. In my case it was a the precursor to horrible morning sickness, faded somewhat when that finally went away, but didn't go completely until the birth. It also meant various foods tasted foul to me - e.g. tea and bread and even chocolate (horrors) first time round

I had this taste when i was pg with my girls and this time round it's not been so bad. I have been told you get it more if you're having a girl - is this true????!!!!

I only had this once in my 3 pregnancies. With the last when I had a DD after 2 DSs.

Mine were all girls and I had it each time, but I don't know if these two facts are related.

I had this in both my pregnancies and then got it again when I had the mirena coil in (so it must be something to do with hormones). I ended up sucking lemon drops and extra strong mints or getting some chewing gum (which I hate but definitely did the trick!).
