Strange placenta, anyone else?

Hi everyone, I'm 11 & a half wks with 3rd baby and have just had some fab results back from my Nuchal scan/blood test today. I've had a few scans so far because I had some spotting at 4, 8 and 9 weeks, nothing much, ANYWAY at each scan they noticed wierd bubbles or cysts on my placenta. During my nuchal scan today the lady took plenty of time scanning and you could see two clearly defined large 'bubbles' or cysts on my placenta. She said she's seen this from time to time, and she doesn't really know what causes it and she's heard that it can affect fetal growth in later pregnancy.

Anyone have this, or had it or heard of it?????

I was told after my last scan a few weeks ago that not all placentas develop nice and smoothly.

'Trying' not to worry. Growth of baby so far is spot on.

Any advice??

Thanks badelaide. I'm surprised no-one has posted any suggestions, I was really hoping someone might be able to shed some light..

I'll sit tight and wait.

Hiya!
I'm afraid I can't really help, but after DD came out, then the placenta... the midwife was prodding it about and looked a bit bemused- then said,

"very strange placenta!" and looked at me as if I could explain it.
Anyway, she sent it off for tests... but I never heard of my placenta ever again...

See, I told you it was of no help to you... but the fact is sometimes things are a bit different, but my DD was absolutely fine with her strange placenta.

Good luck, and I hope somebody else comes along with more relevant info.

xx

bumping for you...

have you spoken to a consultant OB about this?, they should certainly know. You could ask your midwife for the name of a good consultant at your hospital.

Maybe you will have a very bubbly baby

badelaide & canadianmum - Thanks for the bumps lovely ladies.

I asked (during scans) if these lobes/cysts/bubbles are a potential problem and everyone seems quite laid back about it or weren't 100% sure, they haven't suggested that I see a consultant. Not sure if I need to go and see GP (he's lovely) and see what he thinks. I got my 20 week scan date through today where I see my obstetrician afterwards, that's over 8 weeks away.

honeyapple - I was talking to a friend today who told me when she had her son they found a huge lobe on her placenta and were examining it closely, it didn't show up on any of her scans.

Be interesting to see if anyone else has heard of this.

I'm trying really hard not to worry, but it's always there in the back of mind. Really has no-one ever heard of this?

hi

not much help but after my baby was born they found a cyst on the placenta. I did a OMG what does it mean panic and the consultant just said oh don't worry it happens often - it is nothing unusual.

Thanks becklespeckle.

It's reassuring to know that it does happen dimpled and they say it's not a worry. Did they not see it during any of your scans? There's no missing mine.

Dimpled, they picked it up in a scan at 7 weeks. Last scan I had was at 11 and a half weeks and there were two very clear bubbles/cysts.

oh - they did not see it on my dating and nucleui scan which would have been at that time.

Have you been offered any follow up at all?

No, just my 20 week scan. I'm wondering if I'm making too much of this, don't really know whether I should bother my doc with it. It's always on my mind though. But then a lot of mum's have worries through their pregnancies.

well they don't seem worried do they!

I know what you mean though about having something to worry about when your pregnant - you can't help dwelling on it.

If it is making you worry a lot e.g. you still feel as bad tomorrow then I would go to your GP for some reassurance and say you are getting very worried.
