Would I be silly to get an early scan

By my calculations I'm 9 weeks pregnant, and I'm very anxious about it, as I'm terrified of needles, medical treatment etc, so it's all proving to be very stressful.

I've got my midwife appointment on Thursday, and we've chatted and they may do bloods then and there, they may not, depending on how I'm feeling, but I'm thinking if I've already seen there's a baby in there, through a scan, it may give me the push I need.

I'm not feeling at all emotionally connected to this pregnancy - I should care, or be excited or something, but I'm not. Again, if I can see it, then I'm hoping I might start to feel more connected.

Also, more trivially, I want to do calendars for the in laws with family photos on there, and if I get an early scan, I can include the bump on there, which I think will be a nice way to announce it. If I misscarry later, then I'll just bin the calendars. If we wait until my scan which won't be until mid December, it'll be too late.

I'd also like if possible to be able tiki look for any absolute bargains on black Friday. Obviously I'll have to check the returns policy etc, but I know I'd be tempted to go for a bargain.

I'm somewhere tomorrow that I could get a scan for £45 if they have availability. I feel bad that husband wouldn't be there, but I'm very, very tempted...

I would do it while also recognising anxiety can be relatively normal in pregnancy, and so work on that a bit! Hypnobirthing pregnancy cd is very nice for that reason, to enjoy your pregnancy. It's a huge change in life!

I got one at 10 weeks. I was incredibly anxious after a bleed at 8 weeks (when I also had an early NHS scan!) and I just couldn't put my mind at rest about it. It was £40 and worth every penny. I didn't get my '12 week' scan until nearly 14 weeks though and just couldn't wait.

Bear in mind though, for your calendar, that scan photos at that stage can be pretty much just a blob (mine was anyway!)

I had looked at local ones and they were all about £100, which seemed a bit excessive. But tomorrow in going somewhere where they happen to be cheaper. I have no idea if they'd have availability to squeeze me in, but I could try :-)

I've had nothing to indicate anything is wrong, but my best friend found out that she'd miscarried earlier on at her 12 week scan, which has made me a little paranoid.

Mostly its to try to give me a more positive view of being pregnant and there actually is a baby in there, overcoming my fears when I don't even know that there's anything there makes it harder.

The photos are a plus, and I'll see if they are useable or not, but it's mostly the reassurance that things are ok.

If you're anything like me, it won't really resolve your fears or make you feel connected to the pregnancy beyond the actual scan itself. My first pregnancy I had two early private scans and three NHS scans and never felt anything other than anxious and afraid. I have friends who have had late losses and stillbirths and it really hammered home that you are never safe in pregnancy.

That said, my DS is now 16 months and I couldn't be more connected to him. My anxiety evaporated almost as soon as he was born.

I'm now pregnant again and feel exactly the same anxiety as last time, except worse because I don't have the time to sit and try to connect with this baby either. I'm just hoping the outcome is the same!

What I'm saying is, by all means get the scan (and I do recommend it) but don't expect it to magically resolve your anxiety. I now just accept that anxiety is part of my life when pregnant and that I'm only able to bond with the baby after the pregnancy is done.

Yes, go for it. I'm very anxious after a mc with my last time (first pregnancy) and I've had 2 early scans already this time which were worth every penny. I had one at 9 weeks and one yesterday where they put me forward a bit so was 12+3. I have my nhs one this Friday so I only had to wait a week but I was so anxious I really couldn't relax. Statistically, once you get to 9 weeks and see a heartbeat the chance of miscarriage drops to 2% I think it is, and it doesn't get any better than that. After that doesn't matter if you're 9 weeks, 12 weeks, 16 weeks etc so should put your mind at ease :) congratulations and good luck! Also, my 9 week scan photo was clearly a baby (big head, body, little stubby arms and legs like a jellybaby). And that's a really cute was to announce!

i would definitely do it. i had a private scan that i paid £100 for at 8 weeks but it was worth every penny. instant relief. especially when there is a really good viability of the pregnancy if you see a heartbeat at 8 weeks.

I was hoping to go here (www.peek-a-baby.co.uk/early-pregnancy-reassurance), but they don't do Mondays.

There's a place which is an hour from me that we'll hopefully to go instead (www.icanseeyou.co.uk/Pricing.html), which is 40-44 quid. Squeee :-)

Oh, and I can see you does 4d from 10 weeks as well as the usual ultrasound.

Oh, btw, do you think there would be any harm in telling the clinic that I'm 10 weeks rather than 9 +3, because I want it done before my midwife appointment on Thursday, and this place does early scans from 10 weeks. It's only 4 days...

Not silly at all. I went to I Can See You and they were great. If you are 9weeks +3, it's likely they'll see if the 4d works anyway. But inactivity prefer end the standard scan anyway. Peace of mind is really important.

Done!

All is well, baby is prefect size, heartbeat is spot on, too early to see that clearly, but has head, arms, legs and a strong heart.

It was also dancing around like a loon :-)

We also had a good look in 4d, but the placenta was in the way, so couldn't see much, bar an elbow!

Well worth the money.

Awesome! We had an early scan at 10 weeks - best day of my life. Cried when I heard the heartbeat, so special.
Exciting stuff!

Bloods wise, I had my booking bloods at the same time as screening bloods after the 12w scan, this should be an option for you as nervous of needles, makes complete sense for you to only go through it once. Congratulations
