Placent Previa - Few questions...

Hey ladies,
I'm hoping someone can answer a few questions for me! Unfortunately I don't have any friends who have had Placenta Previa so I'm turning to Mumsnet in the hope someone can answer me some questions?! My midwife is lovely but didn't just handed me a leaflet - which didn't say right much if I'm honest.

At my 20w it was detected that I have Placenta Previa and it's covering 100% of my OS! I was told at the Scan that the majority of placentas move enough to have a natural birth. I've been booked in for my 32w Scan to check.

Then when I went to see my midwife last week she said that because it's covering 100% the likelihood of it moving is very slim.

I guess my questions are:

  • Has anyone have PP 100% covering OS which has moved to have a natural birth?
  • Up until now I've had no bleeding at all. Did you have bleeding? It says in the leaflet this could happen from 27w?!
  • At your 32w of it hadn't moved were you put on bed rest or could you go about with your normal life?

I'm not stressing about it - I just want some unanswered questions answering :) I guess what will be will be but I'd just like to be more prepared mentally!

Thank x

I had pp detected at 20 weeks. Referred for further scans and it didn't move at all. No bleeding, no bedrest. I was told to take it easy and at any bleeding go straight in. Booked in for elcs at 38 weeks. They found I had vasa previa too so was instructed to go in if any contractions at all.
Will it move? Maybe. Maybe not,
Will you need bedrest? Probably not if you have no bleeds. If you do bleed at all go straight in - no hanging about. If you do bleed they will assess and it's possible you'll need to stay in.

I had placenta previa detected at 30 weeks after a very small bleed, I was kept in hospital overnight. I wasn't put on bed rest but I was told to start my maternity leave straight away. I had elcs at 37.5 weeks after another small bleed. All was well

And odds for it moving are here:

placentaprevia.wordpress.com

There's nothing at all you can do to make it move - the only thing you can do is be alert for bleeding and ask for clarification on which physical activities to avoid it doesn't. At 20 weeks it's pretty common, and most do move. The placenta rides up as the womb expands and the different sections of the womb 'unfold' at different stages.
I was off on sick leave from six months, but that was more for other complications (I had a shit pregnancy.) I wouldn't have had any inkling I had pp if it wasn't for the scans.

Thank you so much!! I've been really lucky and not had any bleeding so fingers crossed it will stay this way. I had a Scan at 24w due to other concerns and it still hadn't moved - if I have to have a c section then so be it but I just don't feel I've been given much info on it :( I guess at 32w they'll give me more should it have moved or haven't... at least I know what I'll be dealing with!
Thanks ladies!! X

There isn't a huge amount to say about PP apart from if it doesn't move enough you will need a CS, you can bleed at any time but shouldn't need any bed rest. Any bleeding should be reported and you should attend maternity triage to be assessed. If you have abdominal pain this should also be reported. You are at a bigger risk of post partum haemhorrage but this is out of your hands and will be dealt with appropriately. If it is 100% covering the OS it is unlikely to move

I had my 20w scan and was told my placenta was low. At 32w I had another scan and was told it had'nt moved. At 32 + 6 I had a bad bleed and was admitted into hospital. They did an internal scan the next day and I was told I had full PP. I was told to give up work and they initially said I couldn't leave the hospital until 38 weeks but after a week I was allowed to leave the hospital but was sent home on full rest. I have another scan next week- so I'll be 36w- my consultant said there's still the possibility it could move even though it's slim. I would say, take it easy and any bleeding, you should contact the hospital straight away. I hope everything's ok with you and the rest of your pregnancy :)

Hi, I have pp. Discovered at 19 weeks after a bleed. I was advised no sex, no exercise and not to over do it ( very difficult with 2 small kids and working full time). I was told to go in with bleeding or severe pain (like contractions rather than period pain).

I'm now 34 weeks and it has moved a bit, but not enough to avoid a csec.

Im sorry they haven't given you more info than this - it's scary when you don't know what's going on.

I read that most pp do move. But it's less likely if you've previously had a csec.

Gosh I've not been told to avoid sex or anything else for that matter!! I will bring it up with my midwife at my next appointment. This is my first pregnancy - TBH I would be gutted having to have a c section but on the other hand don't care as long as my baby is healthy and arrives into the world safely!! At least I'll know at 32w what I'm being faced with! Thanks mammas x

Yes found out at 20w placenta over cervix

I get checked every 3w due to less cervix due to cone biopsy 20yrs agonas have less cervix

As told probably wouldn't move and at 36/37w they will check agaibnabd if hasn't moved then cs prob 39w as long as no bleeding

Yep I did, always asymtomatic no bleeding at all, never on bedrest and never stopped doing anything (worked 5 days a week commuting into London until 35 weeks). Had a c section at 38+1. She will be 8 in March.

Next pregnancy as it happens no issues at all with the placenta totally moved up at the 20 week scan and was fine for a VBAC.

My advice would be that if it is still low at your next scan to pack a bag and carry your notes as if you bleed you'll stay in a few nights.

Mine was near but not touching and was expected to move but have a bleed at 35 weeks and was kept in and delivered DS by EMCS at 36 weeks. He is fine and we stayed in hospital about a week.
I was a bit of an idiot and just took their word for it it'd move and hadn't finished work or packed a bag or anything Blush

Most do move though. Just attend the scans and good luck!

Thank you everyone!! I'll be finding out shortly. TBH I've come to the realisation that what will be will be?! I'm just taking it super easy and trying not to do too much. Will see what the sonographer says at 32w and then if it's still covering will get my bags packed! Confused

Hi Blossom, my consultant said they can't always tell and it's not on my notes just says 100% OS - but it could be 100% of the edge or be smack bang in the middle. My 32w scan should show this though I am hoping? X
