Pregnancy

Anyone else tired of all these rules?

Ever since I spent a whole pregnancy heroically resisting my craving for peanut m & m’s due to nut allergy advice, only to find later that I needn’t have bothered, I have felt a little rebellious with this long list of pregnancy do’s and don’ts. So this pregnancy I have decided to break a few rules.

  1. Dyed my hair despite those ominous warnings (it looks the biz and it counters that unattractive heifer feeling).
  2. I cross my legs in public places so I don’t loll around spread-eagled like a drunk at a bus stop.
  3. I eat what I crave, be it garlic, onion, chilli or cereals drenched in milk despite these things giving me crippling heartburn and indigestion. I ENJOY moaning, groaning and draping myself over furniture seeking relief. It makes me feel dramatic.
  4. Never weighed myself and not about to keep an eye on it now, thanks midwife buddy.
  5. Eating chicken from even the dingiest take-out and slapping on mayo like it’s not going to be available in 2017.
  6. Haven’t done a pelvic floor exercise. Have checked out price of lady-wee-pads and they’re quite reasonable.

Anyone else??

I think the only rules I listened to was foods that carried bacteria (which I wasn't really a fan of anyway)
I think using common sense is the best way to go. Have you got ill from it before? If the answer is no and it's from a reliable seller then eat away

Ok, this isn't AIBU, the first 5 are fine.

But YABU to ignore your pelvic floor.

Why aren't you suppose to cross your legs? Never heard that one before

Love this..... a runny egg is like my version of porn these days!!! I find myself staring longingly at pictures of cooked breakfasts

I thought mayonnaise was fine as long as its not that fresh homemade stuff. Hellmans is my friend.

I would definitely recommend the pelvic floor exercises....i have a friend who did and she has lived to regret it. She goes no where without a tena lady and trampolines are a risky business!!

Go for it. Most of them are more of a case of 'doing X may increase your chance of Y' rather than 'doing X will cause Y to happen' which I think lots of people misinterpret.

Some people think it's not worth taking any risk, others are happy to take a calculated risk. It's a case of being able to make an informed choice, they're not actually 'rules'!

Eggs are all pasturised now anyway!

I had rare steak. MMMMMMMMMMM

the one I craved was paté Then I read that the study whcih said it was a bad thing was only one study, never repeated, and French women don't have the same restriction on that or cheese! BAH!

I've been drinking far too much tea this time round. I think this baby will come out craving an espresso hit!
As of today I'm limiting it the 30 cups as per the guidelines!!

They aren't rules they're just advisory, you don't have to follow them.

Runny eggs fine. So are stilton, all pasteurised cheeses, mayonnaise, shellfish....
The NHS pages are helpful on this. There's a lot of heresay surrounding what you can and can't have!

You're fine with all of the things listed, just no booze, fags or pate and cook meat through. You're mad to to do pelvic floor exercises though, lots of people get away with one baby without having problems but I've known of few get away with two! Put it this way: you' ll never river dance again.

Honestly, you sound like a petulant toddler. Firstly, they are guidelines, not rules. Secondly, at least one of them isn't a guideline at all, NHS website on hair dye says : "The chemicals in permanent and semi-permanent hair dyes are not highly toxic. Most research, although limited, shows it's safe to colour your hair while pregnant." Thirdly, eating something you know will cause you digestive issues is entirely your choice, not one I'd make as I dislike indigestion but i don't care about yours.

And the peanut allergy advice was based on the best scientific understanding at the time. When more research showed the recommend course of action did not lead to the desired results, the advice was changed. That isn't getting things wrong, that is how science works. It is how we learn and improve and keep people healthier.

likewise, feel free to take risks with pelvic floor health all you want. But don't expect the world to look up to you as some kind of James Dean rebel inspirational figure just because you think you are cool.

I had the odd light beer shandy too. Refreshing on very hot days.

I eat whatever I want including pate. I drink a glass of wine every couple of weeks. Im an original rebel. But I piss myself frequently in public due to ignoring the pelvic floor advice in my (much) earlier pregnancies.

All pasteurised cheeses are absolutely not fine. Anything with a mouldy rind, listeria risk. Small but not non-existent.

Op, none of your originals are advised against apart from perhaps the dingy chicken one.

Hair dye? Crossing your legs? Draping? Mayo? Meh. More fool you if you don't do em. Leaking wee is really unpleasant.

I nearly cracked and bought a brie and cranberry sandwich today, but I'm holding firm... with maybe the odd extra cup of tea / diet coke some days!

You know they changed the rules on eggs earlier this year... eggs are fine as long as you get the lion stamp ones and salmonella is now gone from eggs... no more deprivation ladies!

What's wrong with crossing our legs? Most of the ones you've listed aren't rules anyway, but personal choice. And the peanut one changed ages ago.
