Pregnancy

How did your pregnancy duration compare to your mum's?

I've been wondering whether gestational duration is hereditary - I haven't found a lot of evidence either way, although there is some suggestion that it could be, so I'm turning to anecdote :)

Those of you who have children already- how did the length of your pregnancy compare to your mum's? Or even your MIL's?

secretly hoping it's hereditary on the baby's part instead of mine and he takes after his dad to arrive 10 days early instead of me and ALL my siblings who were 2 weeks late and had to be induced

Both mum and MIL went to 42 weeks with first pregnancies. I went just past 42 with mine.

Ooh good thread! Can't help I'm afraid (pregnant with my first) but really interested to read answers as my sister and I were both premature Confused The midwife said there is no correlation but it would be good to know if there's any research out there!

My mum had me 2 weeks early then my sister 10 days early.

I was induced at 12 days over but still didn't go in to active labour by 15 days over so had to have c-section so not like my mum at all!!! X

Totally different. My mum went over 2 weeks late both times. I was early both times

My mum went a month early with me, not sure about my sister. My sister went a month early with her DS too. I will report back in 7 months how I fare Wink

This is interesting. My midwife told me the other day that looking at your mums delivery dates as a good indicator of when you will gave your baby. I'm due in less than two weeks.

My mum: Only me - five days late

MIL: DH supposedly three weeks late
SIL 1, week late
SIL 2, week early

Me: DS1, 36.3
DD: 41.3

Don't think there's any correlation.

My mum went beyond 42 weeks with me and both my brothers. She was induced for 2 of us. She had a 3 day early stage with her eldest.

My MIL went over with my DP and his DB and she was induced with at least one of them.

I went 15 days over with my DC and after 3 days in the early stage was induced. It couldn't have been more similar to my mum's first delivery.

Interesting range of responses. From what I've read of the limited research, and what I've seen on here, I'm inclined to think there's little correlation.

I did read something interesting about how pregnancy dating has become so much more accurate in the last 10-20 years that this sort of research is pretty moot anyway, as our mums' due dates would have been a much rougher estimate and thus harder to tell whether they actually did deliver early, on time or late.

38 weeks tomorrow. I'm not at the "get this baby out of me" stage yet but also I reallllllly don't want to wait another 4 weeks...!

DM - had me on due date
- induced two days early with DB

Me - DC1 five days early
- DC2 five days late
- DC3 five days early

So similar enough really.

Mum:
1 (me) - 2 weeks early
2 (DB) - on time

Me:
1 (DD) - 7 weeks early
2 (DS) - 4 weeks early

I expect that there was something else going on with my pregnancies that caused the premature arrivals. (We didn't ever find out what it was.)

That makes a lot of sense.

I was intrigued to find out that in France they work out due dates based on a gestation period of 41 weeks, not 40. I wonder if other countries have different gestation periods too?

All 3 of my Mum's babies were 7-10 days early (I was 7 days).
My DS was 4 days early, currently 38 weeks pregnant with number 2 and hoping for another early one!
Don't know about MIL, she had 2 ELCS.

Ooooooh this is interesting...

My mum had me 3 days late I was due on April Fools Day

My daughter arrived 5 days late

Kind of similar

My Mum gave birth to all 4 of us within a few days of our due dates.
My older sister was 2 weeks over with her first and induced at term with her second as he was massive.

My MIL's water broke with my husband and his brother but had to be induced with both as she didn't go into labour (water broke around her due dates). My SIL (we are both daughters in law to my MIL, if that makes sense- we married brothers), her water broke at 4 days overdue but also had to be induced as she didn't go into labour.

I'm due with #1 in just over 3 weeks so I'm hoping I go like my Mum and not my sister or MIL!

My DM had me 3 weeks early and my 2 DBS were a week early. My MIL had her 2 a week late.
I had first 40+3 days 2 and other DCs 3 1-7 days early.
DS's DS (my DGS) was born due date and my DGD (from my DD) was born 39 weeks. So far my DCs pattern is similar to mine. DGC 3 due next year - we shall see!
Interesting thread. I've noticed women's labours are often similar to their DMs.

My mum had me 3 days after her due date

I had ds 2 weeks after mine and dd 8 days before!

Hmm not very conclusive sorry!

Mum: 38+5 (me)
Me: 38+1

Both very quick labours, less than 5 hours from the first contraction to the baby arriving. For both of us our waters broke first too. And both babies were back-to-back! So in our case quite a lot of similarities.

Hopelass · 17/10/2016 00:40

My mum went over by 5 days with me.
I had both my DS's early by 3 days and 8 days respectively.

I hope I don't follow too closely after my mum or I will giving birth between Christmas and new year, think I'd rather have a January baby closer to the due date!

So far our pregnancies have been opposite, mum fit as a fiddle for first 3 months whilst I only really moved to vomit, mum then really ill for the rest of pregnancy whilst so far I'm fine, mum consultant led where I'm midwife... So I'll probably go to 42 weeks since she gave birth at exactly 38 weeks!

But I know my dates, she didn't, she was also surprised to discover 26 years after the fact that 38 weeks is considered full term so I wasn't really as early as she thought. So it's hard to really guesstimate.

My mother had 6 of us on our due dates - or went into labour on the date - and number 7 was 2 weeks late.

I had my 3 on my due dates.

My sisters, however, have both gone late, my older sister was overdue with her first 3 then on time (I think) with her 4th. My younger sister has 1, who was overdue.

Mum - 1 week early, 3 weeks early.

Me - 1 week late and 38 week induction.

The speed of labours is supposed to be hereditary. My mum has two vary fast lablaors so did I. I wish she had told me bigots my first one!!
