Had an early private scan today at 8+3 to be told there was a healthy yolk but no embryo or heartbeat and what was there measures around 6 weeks. Consultant could not confirm a miscarriage and asked if my dates could be wrong but I don't think they can as we didn't have sex after getting my bfp. I have to wait a week to be rescanned - this isn't going to have a happy ending is it?

Hi. I had a very similar experience, if not nearly exact. I noticed a heavy gush of brown discharge, rang the midwife, she booked me in hospital for early scan (just to be safe she said). I was 9 weeks 2 days on the day of my scan. During the scan they told me the baby measured around 7 weeks 3 days and no heartbeat. They literally told me there & then that baby didn't make it & gave me all my options. I was in a daze. I decided to wait a week or 2 to decide what option to take (D&C or miscarry naturally) just incase they was wrong. I held on to hope. But around 2 weeks after that scan I started heavily bleeding & naturally miscarried. They told me if there was a heartbeat they would have heard it as their equipment is that sensitive, also that it measured smaller because foetus had died & was shrinking back into my womb wall.
Have you had any symptoms? My advice? I would take on board what they say, they know their jobs. And try not to get your hopes up. I'm sorry, as hard as it is I know. This happens to me a few months ago.

Correction ** my baby measured 8 +3 not 7 like I previously said. And it's funny you say 8+3 as well, as they told me that's the day my baby stopped growing & Heart had stopped.

Or it could be that you do have your dates wrong. I don't think they can pick up on a heartbeat until at least 7 weeks. You could think that you are more advanced than what you actually are. Do you know the dates of when your last period was? If you do you can work it out from that. I'm so sorry that your going through this. I'd defo wait until next scan tho, just incase you do have your dates wrong as that scan will confirm it final for you.

I doubt your dates could be that off, but it can happen. I had a similar thing last Dec. Had lots of brown and red discharge so went to the hospital for an early scan at 5+1 and sac measured for about 4+6. Had another few scans between then and 9+5 where they embryo never grew and I was finally diagnosed with a MMC. It's an absolutely rubbish thing to go through. If you check the miscarriage and pregnancy loss tab under Body & Soul, there is lots of wonderful advice and support Flowers

Thanks everyone. My date of last period was 17th July. I've had no bleeding or anything. Still having pregnancy symptoms really. EPU won't see me because I'm not bleeding so will have to wait next week for the scan, I'm not expecting good news though - my hopes are not up. Such a horrible thing to have to go through :(

How come EPU won't see you earlier? What will probably happen otherwise is that you'll get scanned at EPU next week, but they're not allowed to take your private scan into consideration, so they will send you away for another week or two between scans. I would try and find a walk in centre today or tomorrow, just to get the ball rolling. I'm so sorry again.

The EPU won't see me because I'm not bleeding. The consultant that saw me at the private hospital is also the lead consultant at the maternity hospital so I think it is a straightforward referral. I guess they are just being cautious in case my dates are wrong.

It's defo a MMC if your dates aren't wrong, judging by what you have said when your last period was. These specialists know you don't always have a full on miscarriage right away, no bleeding etc. But I guess they are taking extra precautions just incase. Horrible situation to be in, your in limbo. I still had pregnancy symptoms when I had MMC, the symptoms didn't go until I miscarried naturally around a fortnight later, even then it was a case of my symptoms gradually going every day, after natural miscarriage as it takes a while for the pregnancy hormone to leave the body.

This happened to me last week, except I had had some spotting. Meant to be 9w, measuring 6 with no heartbeat.

Realistically, yes, you're looking at a Mmc if you're absolutely sure on your dates (I was).

I started miscarrying after the weekend and I'm still bleeding but over the worst.

It's an exceptionally shit thing to happen. I wish you much strength. Be kind to yourself and make sure there are those around you who love you and support you. Limbo is the hardest and I hope you come out of that soon so you can move forward.

And I agree with the poster above: find a walk in EPU and get scanned because this process can take a long time (they will automatically tell you to come back in a week anyway) and you'll want to get it started...

I'm really sorry that you're going through this. I'm afraid this happened to me too - I had a heartbeat but the baby was two weeks too small. Four weekly scans later I had a mmc (finished by a d&c) last week. My consultant did, however, say tat although it's rare, we're not machines, and babies do sometimes catch up...
