Pregnancy

Obstetric cholestasis and acupuncture.

I had obstetric cholestasis with my first child 2 years ago, which led to me being induced at 37 weeks. It was utter hell having this condition and I was covered in scars as I was itching soooo much that I was scratching myself until I bled when I was asleep. The induction was awful too as she really wasn't ready to come!

I'm now 25 weeks pregnant with baby number 2 and I was told by doctors and midwife that there is nothing I can do to prevent getting it again (and that's it highly likely I will) but I spoke to someone the other day and she prevented getting it again by going to an acupuncturist (of course this could be a coincidence). Does anyone have experience with this? Is here ANYTHING I can do? I started to feel itchy last night so I'm starting to panic!

I've never heard of any way to prevent it, but maybe ask on the ICP Support Facebook page. Loads of people on there, including folk involved in research.

I'm waiting for it to start too.

Hmm I'm a bit sceptical that sticking some needles in you could get the bile acids flowing normally out of the liver?!

More likely the lady was one of the lucky ones who doesn't get OC in every pregnancy (like me, I only had it in my 2nd).

I don't think there's anything you can do but I had O.C in my first pregnancy and I'm full term with my second pregnancy now and it hasn't re-appeared. It's pure luck but it does happen. Fingers crossed for you.
