Pregnancy

29 weeks low platelet count

Had bloods done on Fri but have to have more done due to low platelet count. Have never had this before and pregnancy has been very normal until now, although I've recently had itching under my arms/ breasts which I put down to heat as I was in France. Now worried it's something more. Has anyone had this? What did it mean? I've redone the tests today, including full blood count, so should find out in a few days.

Hi there, I have had low platelets throughout my pregnancy.

It shouldn't be related to itching but basically means that you are at risk of bleeding out during delivery, low platelets meaning it takes longer for your bloody to clot & bleeding to stop.

But don't stress about it! If they know about it they will be prepared during your labour - have blood on standby etc. I am classed as high risk because of this & they monitor my platelets regularly. My platelets are currently around 90 which doesn't affect anything really, if they drop below 80 then it means that I can't have an epidural (although your hospital might have a slightly different view on this, I have read some hospitals will give an epidural when bloods are 70).

What was your number? Try not to stress x

Has anyone else had this? I've had a call to say I've got a low count but it's not extremely low so nothing to worry about but still haven't been sent an apt to discuss with a dr which is what will happen I was told. I want to give birth at my local midwife run hospital which is amazing but worried I'll have to go to the city hospital because of this. Anyone had any experiences with this? Tia

Mine were just under the limit and the dr rang me to tell me and seemed very concerned. The midwife said they wouldn’t’ need to do anything unless they were below 60 and seemed to think the dr was just causing a fuss. Speak to your midwife, they know the most about pregnancy.

That's interesting, both health professionals saying complete opposites 🤷‍♀️ does baffle me. May I ask how long you had to wait until you spoke/saw a doctor about it? With the dr being concerned did you have to have more tests? Did it affect anything? Have you had your baby since or are you still pregnant?
I got the call about 2 days after Xmas and I still haven't heard anything from anyone about it.....🤔

I just mentioned it at my next midwife appointment and she dismissed it. She said I could have regular blood tests if I wanted but I usually faint so that just seemed unnecessarily traumatic.

It made no difference to the birth. I got to use the MLU and had no issues. My little girl is now 5 weeks old.

If you’ve not heard anything about it, then I imagine your levels arrn’t That low, like mine. Could you contact your midwife to put your mind to rest?
