Stomach cramps at 34 weeks

Last night DH and I had a rich dinner, we went to bed a couple of hours later and twice during the night I was woken up by stomach cramps, the sort you might get before having a horribly upset stomach, like the very worst of period pains.

I didn't call the MW or 101 - I'm not sure why, I guess I was just seeing how they went.

Symptoms:

  • No bleeding (no unusual discharge)
  • Baby moving as normal
  • Cold, twisty, graunchy pains like intense period pains starting at diaphragm moving down to to hips
  • Pains start like sick-bug pains, grow to a crescendo at about five minutes, and the dwindle for five minutes (so 10-15 minutes of pain each time)
  • I did manage to go to the loo both times (about an hour apart) - but tummy was not upset

Baby is currently breech, and seemed to be transverse by the second set of pains, so I wondered if that could have anything to do with it.

I feel largely fine today (slightly twingy stomach, not painful).

If the pain bursts had been shorter I'd have presumed it was contractions/practice contractions.

If there had been a third batch I'd have called the doc.

Has anyone experienced similar?

I would call your midwife and get checked out.

I should add - my urine test this week (standard antenatal test) showed leukocytes - could this be a UTI/Kidney infection?

Well leukocytes alone are indicative of inflammation, not necessarily infection. Nitrites would suggest infection. Yes you could have a UTI, but it could also be labour starting, I really think with those symptoms you need checking out.

Thanks SirVix - I'm such a doof, as soon as you said "call the mw" I did (I don't know why I was so cautious to do so last night).

She was lovely (as they all seem to be). She said that if it happens again to call the maternity ward and talk them through the symptoms and they can advise.

She didn't seem worried but you're right, it's getting a bit close just to write-off cramps as 'something I've eaten'...

They do sound rather like labour pain, but could well be Braxton Hicks. You can buy tester sticks at the pharmacy if you are concerned about a UTI. Handy for over weekends. i always have them in the bathroom cabinet as a few years ago I had a kidney infection. I was so horribly ill that I live in fear of ever getting another! Hope all is ok, and that you are just gearing up for labour in a month or so.
