Pregnancy

Struggling to keep myself hydrated

SquedgieBeckenheim · 16/08/2016 13:51

I am now 8+4 weeks. I've forgotten what normal digestion feels like, I'm either nauseous or got heartburn. Nothing tastes right, every form of fluid I try just leaves a horrible taste in my mouth, or triggers heartburn so I'm struggling to drink enough. Today I've had a horrendous headache all day (tried to take some paracetamol this morning for it, but that made me gag which led to vomiting, not tried again!). I'm trying to sip on water constantly to get rid of it, but I just can't face it.
Any suggestions for alternatives that I may not have thought of? I'm just feeling miserable, and due back at work tomorrow so need to be better!

Ice lollies helped me loads when I was suffering. R Whites lemonade ones were a favourite although strawberry and raspberry ones appealed too.

I had to drink sweet cordial and water at that stage, loads of the stuff. Hated the taste of water.

Take something for the heartburn. Gaviscon or whatever. Sip slowly and have loads of ice. Water is tasteless but the coolness of the ice will help. Little sips as often as possible. Ice cold milk is comforting for heartburn too.

Ice lollies? Melon?

Thanks for the replies. Lollies might be worth a try, but not practical all the time!
I've tried:
Milk - funny taste in mouth, but helped the heartburn!
Lemon infused water (what I drank all the time before pregnancy) - heartburn
Squash - funny taste in mouth
Flavoured water - funny taste in mouth/heartburn, depending on flavour
Mineral water - funny taste in mouth
Filtered water - started trying today, just very very boring!

Oh, and I'm on omeprazole twice daily for the heartburn. Gaviscon makes me gag which makes the heartburn worse!

Have you tried the different gaviscon flavours? I can only stomach peppermint one

Could you get milk down to super super cold (almost frozen?)

Personally I found sipping drinks prolonged the pain so would drink a pint in one go and then stem the agony with gaviscon or rennies

I second the R whites lemonade lollies, I had loads of these in the first tri. Lovely and refreshing!

I've tried peppermint and aniseed gaviscon, I think it's a texture thing rather than a taste thing. I have milk straight out the fridge, and it helps but still leaves an odd taste in my mouth so that makes me not want to drink it.

Seriously, try your drinks with ice - makes a huge difference.

The only thing I could stomach and keep down was caffeine free coke. Not the best in the world but it stopped me feeling quite so grim.

I had this, staying hydrated was a huge problem. I drank a lot of herbal teas (only kept the tea bag in for a minute or so because strong flavours made me gag!) hot chocolates made me feel normal for about 15 blissful minutes, ice lollies were great. As was carrying around a bottle of cold Evian with the sports top to it, I found myself drinking it mindlessly and suddenly you've drunk 1.5L without realising. I really enjoyed Ribena for a couple of weeks. Waitrose have a cordial.. something like Elderflower and Pomegranate which was absolutely delicious with some ice in it. Hardly need any cordial in the water so shouldn't irritate the heartburn, just enough to make it not taste like water (which tasted weird to me!). Anything you can do to make the water a bit fancy, like ice, a straw, a bit of mint. Good luck! It doesn't last forever and soon you'll be guzzling water like there's no tomorrow!

Agree with PP who suggested ice, I'm 26 weeks and my sickness has come back and the only drinks I can face have to be ice cold!

I second coke if your feeling nauseous. Both coke and Fanta helped my stomach settle. It's not the most healthy drink but it's only for a few weeks as the nausea tends to go around 12 weeks and I had a toddler to chase after so it was a godsend when I discovered that!

Mint tea helped me a bit.

In early pregnancy ice cold was the way to go, once morning sickness kicked in at 6 weeks I couldn't stomach liquid finally found I could drink warm Vimto, no other squashes just Vimto and it had to be made with hot water and left to cool for a bit...

I'm over that stage now but still struggle to drink enough!

If fizzy drinks make you burp, could you let them go slightly flat before drinking them? Fizzy drinks were the only thing that saw me through the first 20 weeks or so of all three pregnancies thanks to awful sickness / nausea. Water was vomit -inducing for ages! Slightly flat coke, or elderflower cordial with sparking water...

And most definitely ice lollies galore whenever convenient.

Oh and also the juice from tinned fruit - just remembered that one! One of the few things that smelled / tasted nice and normal for absolutely ages!

If you struggle with gaviscon, try peptac, get it prescribed. Or gaviscon tablets I've found helpful for when I don't want to lug the huge glass bottle about.

Ice, ice lollies, jubblies etc. Freeze fruit like segments of orange, apple, grapes. Be careful you're not eating too much acidic fruit though because that can really make heartburn worse.

If you can manage smoothies, I found strawberry, banana and yoghurt/milk ones helpful because the yoghurt stopped my throat feeling so raw from the acid. If you can't drink it, freeze if into homemade ice lollies, that way you're getting fruit aswell as hydration.

I feel for you. Acid reflux/heartburn has been my one issue.
