Pregnancy

Second hand vaping

babynelly2010 · 08/08/2016 18:45

Hi, we just found out we are pregnant, super excited! At work I sit next to a person that smokes e cigarets.
I am new to office so dont feel like I can say anything but everytime I hear that bubbling sound and him sucking the vapour about 4 feet away from me I want to get up and slap him on his face very litterally.
Any one knows if this vaping is harmfull to baby in that praximity? I was thinking getting usb air purifier and put it between us, any ideas if it will make any difference? Any advice on how to deal with this please?

There is no evidence that there is anything harmful in second hand vape. How to deal with it? Ignore it.

What are the office rules about vaping at your desk?

'We are pregnant' I think you mean you are. I'm very surprised that he's allowed to cape at his desk anyway, seems very unprofessional. There is no evidence to say that second hand vapour is harmful.

I am not sure but I assume it allows indoor vaping as noone said anything.
I am just sort of a bit taken by it. I am an ex smoker myself but in all honesty if I needed to vape I think I would not doit next to collegues... everytime I end my day I always have a funny taste all though it could be mental. I am concerned that there is not enough studies about it to know the effects...

I think it is quite strange and unprofessional to be vaping at your desk in an office. i guess it is quite new and most offices would not have a policy around it yet. If it bothers you maybe time your tea/toilet breaks for when he starts up or ask to move desks so you aren't sat right next to him?

We are expecting is fine. We are pregnant is not.

I think you should be fine with the second hand vape. You either need to ask him to stop, raise it with management or get used to it I'm afraid.

What gin said. There's a great new Public Health England guide here to help employers decide whether to permit vaping in the workplace. Worth a read if you're worried, and also worth sharing with your employer.

Congratulations Flowers

Thats may be good idea llian. He is an late person if I come early and leave early I could get less of this vaping, stand up for toilet as soon as I hear the bubbling noise.
Very strange this vaping, I appriciate the whole trying to quit smoking and offices sipporting that but I think my be considerations should be given to others...

This was a good study when it first came out www.ecigarette-research.org/research/index.php/whats-new/whatsnew-2015/226-sp

I believe that there is no 'passive vaping' effect with e cigs, so would consider you to be completely fine in your colleagues company.

I would also consider this - if he is stopped from vaping, or made to vape outside if he were still a smoker, he may well return to cigarettes. If he does that then you would be more 'at risk' from the passive smoking effects (particles on his body/clothing).

I'd suggest talking to him about it, say that it is concerning you and ask what he would be prepared to do to make you feel better

Is everyone really nit picking about that? How supportive.

I'm surprised that they're allowed in the office, most laws about smoking cover vaping too now - so signs on buses and bus stands etc say 'on electronic cigarettes' too. Maybe talk to your manager about it?

I vape but tbh wouldn't dream of doing it indoors in close proximity to non vapers/at work. Could you have a friendly word with him, maybe say you're getting some nausea and the smell makes it worse? If he's a reasonable sort I would have thought you and he could work out a compromise.

Thanks all, I may strike a conversation about it when I see him vaping tomorrow, just to see what his stand on it. I am going to look for that vaping policy as well. I feel a bit better knowing that there are studies showing that vaping is not bad to bystanders but still I think its arguable. Cigarrets once were safe too...

I'm surprised that he is allowed to vape indoors I thought there was a ban on vaping inside public spaces.

Give HR a ring tomorow, I bet it's really irritating and distracting. Does a big plume of smoke erupt around him?

Report
Dutchcourage · 08/08/2016 19:42

Don't day anything to him before you speak to HR as if they tell him to stop he will know it's come from you and you don't need that when your so new

babynelly2010 · 08/08/2016 19:59

Ok will not say anything then and converse with hr first, good idea, bit I think it will be obvious since I am new and there was no complaints before.
