New Mattress Needed?

We're using the cot from DS1 for our second child due in April.

Is it necessary to buy a new mattress for each child using the cot?

We were told that we didn't HAVE to, but naturally that got me worried anyway, and I figured that the 70 quid for a new mattress was that much in the grand scheme of things.
Sorry if that doesn't help much!!!!

Baby is due in March and DD has just move into a new bed but I will definately buy a new mattress for the cot. I thought you weren't allowed to use second hand ones (you know what i mean, not "supposed" to as opposed to "not allowed".)

No you don't need a new mattress. Especially not if they're full siblings apparently.

We didn't bother getting a new mattress for DS2. And the only reason we're going to replace it this time round (for DC3) is because DS2 has completely destroyed it. You can get them very cheaply though - Kiddicare have them from about £20 if you're really concerned

I have used the same one that DD1 had for nearly 3 years-never gave it a second thought. might get a new one if I have any more children.

i thought it was cos of nasty things that can live in the matress??obviously if you get a 2nd hand cot and dont know where its been(sorry-that sounds awful)then you need a new matress .i've got a new moses basket matress for db5(due in march)cos the moses babsket has been used for 2 of my babies now,but i was wondering about the cot matress as it was bought new for dd2.

I used the same mattress for ds1, ds2 and dd. When I got to ds3, I took a look at the mattress and found a sort of mould growing on the foam inner so bought a new mattress for what I knew would be my last child even though the outer appearance of the old mattress was fine.

I guess if it is something you are going to worry about, it is no great expense to buy a new one (make sure it is the right size though as gaps betwen mattress and cot are dangerous).

i'd be interested to know what the latest official advice is,as i know old matresses have been linked to cot death, but ive never read anything official about using the same matress for brothers and sisters.
