12 week sn cancelled

Hi All,

Just after a little bit of advice. My wife is 12 weeks pregnant today and we were due to go for a 12 week scan tomorrow. We got home from work today to find a letter saying our appointment has been moved from Bolton One to Bolton Hospital and no scan will be done at the appointment.

For a little bit of background this will be our first child and we suffered a miscarriage at the end of last year when she was 11 weeks pregnant. This time around we had a private early scan at 8 weeks and all looked ok.

So my question is whether this kind of thing happens all the time with appointments? Is there likely to be anything to worry about? Could something have shown up in the blood tests that they took at the midwife appointments?

My wife is really upset and concerned especially after what happened last year and I am concerned that they have moved the appointment from a clinic to the hospital.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

NHS appointments are often jiggled round at short notice.
Have you and your wife been to a booking in appointment with the midwife yet? Its the appointment where the midwife would gather both your medical histories and ask lots of questions.
I wonder if they will do that at the hospital then book you in for a scan afterwards. I've heard of that happening before although not as late as 12w.
Hopefully someone more helpful will be along soon.

Hi,

Yes we saw the midwife and did all of the medical history questions when she was 8 weeks - it was at this appointment that they gave us the date of the 12 week scan.

I just can't believe that they would cancel a scan at such short notice especially given what we went through last year! Not only do we now have the stress of wondering if something is wrong, but we both have to juggle our day around tomorrow as we both have work commitments. Rant over! :)

Gosh how annoying. If hey don't scan her then I think it would be worth paying for a private scan for reassurance.

Appointments do get cancelled quite often, I've had three moved recently. The worry when you don't know what's going on is hard, I know, but I doubt the people moving the appointment will know about your history, so it's not that they're being inconsiderate.

If it was something showing up in the blood tests, I think you'd have got a phone call, not just an appointment letter. That's how they contacted me when there was concern about blood test results. It could be that although they can't do the scan at the new appointment, they still plan to do the bloods they do at 12 weeks?

You have to do the chromosomal abnormality bloods at the same time as the scan I was told so having those bloods and no scan won't work.

Can you call your midwife in the morning? It's not on to have an appointment canx with no explanation as to why the new appointment doesn't include a scan, it's worrying - I would be worried but I am sure unnecessarily so - try your midwife or is there a number on the new letter to find out more? The anomaly scan can be up to 14 weeks plus 1 (I think) so don't worry it'll be too late Flowers

My midwife appointment (med history etc one) got cancelled yesterday, 4hours before I was due to see her.. So I can understand how frustrated you are! I would just call them up and explain the situation and they will know how important it would be to get the scan done. Maybe it was just the wrong standard letter they sent to you?
I was on the phone a lot yesterday as where I live th next mw appt is now available in 3 weeks (!) when I hopefully will be 10wks and I was concerned that it would then be too late to get a slot for the 12wk scan.. So they gave me a number to call and I booked the scan even before I've been seen by anybody!

I spoke to the hospital today and they were not sure why the booking staff had moved the appointment so late on. The hospital have now said that if we come to our appointment an hour early then they will fit us in for a scan.

Thanks everyone.
