crampy pains and shooting pains

Hi,
I'm 35weeks today.
Yesterday I felt period cramps at the bottom of my abdomen. This morning I rolled over and had a massive shooting pain from the right hand side of my groin across. I've also had one in my back and the cramping is still their tonight.
I was seeing my midwife anyway and she seemed quite happy said baby was head down and heartbeat fine.
I've tried looking things up but don't know if this is stretching, braxton or anything!
I also read something that said it could be the babies head engaging. Would the midwife be able to tell by feeling if it was?
