Morning Sickness Tips

This has probably been done before so apologies. I'm 8.5 weeks pregnant and have the most awful morning sickness. It started about 3 days ago and is really draining me. i had sickness in my last two pgs with DS's but this is a lot worse.
It starts from the minute i wake up til the minute i go to sleep
I constantly feel sick and can not stomach eating anything as soon as anything passes my lips i want to throw up. I'm sick 2- 3 times per day. Being sick as such doesn't bother me cos once i've been sick i feel better, but this constant nauseous feeling is really getting me down.
Its a viscious circle cos i feel worse when i don't eat but i can't eat without feeling awful. Its getting to the point i'm dreading going into the kitchen or feeling hungry. Please help.

Twinings lemon and ginger is working for me, its not making it go away but relieves it a bit. I also find that a quick walk down the lane helps to. A bit of fresh air and all that.

Giner can be really helpful. Ginger biscuits can work as does cyrstalised ginger if you can stomach it!

Some people say crackers work to.

Poor thing! I was really sick with this pregnancy until i was about 13 weeks. I found that sour fizzy gummy sweets worked best for me.

Another vote for the travel sickness wristbands!
The good thing about them is that they take the edge of the sickness enought to allow you to eat something - then you'll feel a whole lot better!

I tried your fizzy sweets GEGs and I think its working. I would have never thought of that.

Will watch this thread with interest as I'm feeling very green myself.

Sour fizzy sweets - like tangfastics?

I found bland carbs good with DS1 (hula hoops mostly) but this time round, for some reaon, I found wine gums very helpful

I found really cold soda water with fresh lemon helped take the edge of it for me. In fact any fizzy cold drink. Also eating frequently helped a bit too.

Smelling a cut lemon. I know it sounds odd, but it was quite effective. And not fighting the urge to throw up. I always threw up as soon as I got up. So I would lie in bed, feeling awful for half an hour before I had to get up or be late for work. hen I would throw up and feel better. Eventually I just bit the bullet and did it. Same at other times of the day. If I wasn't in the middle of a lesson (awkward), I would just nip to the loo and let it out. ANd then I could eat...

I would also say that some foods made me feel much worse. I couldn't bear the smell of vegetables at all. Ate no cooked vegetables at all for the first five months of each preganancy. COuld manage salad and took vitamin pills. I lived off plain chicken and rice mostly. Dh was banished to another room with a lot of his food. Stick to safe foods.

Oh, and the smell of lemon got me through dissecting a sheep's pluck (lungs and heart) at 9.15am. SO it was pretty effective for me...

Hi all
Well so far today boiled fruit sweets have helped, think cos it gives me a bit of sugar, so then don't feel too sick to eat anything.
Searched the preggie pop sweeties but you can only buy online, so that made me tried boiled sweets.
Also finding i can eat salt and vinegar square crisps, so a bit of an improvement. Well be keeping an eye on this thread as no doubt these won't work in a few days and i'll neeed new ideas.
Many Thanks

i was ill up to 22 weeks, remember it well, you have my utter sympathy.
here are my top tips:

  • make yourself eat something every 2 hours, even if just a rich tea biscuit. don't let your sugar levels get low - ever.
  • eat before you get up in the morning
  • if/when you wake in the night eat something
  • drink peppermint tea if you can
  • eat carbs a lot
  • seabands can help here
  • take it as easy as possible
  • get as much fresh air as possible
  • avoid any strong smells (petrol stations/smoke etc.)

And remember, it is a sign of a strong baby! That really got me through it.

Agree that fizzy cold drinks worked for me - probably because they have a lot of sugar in.

I vomited right up to delivery, and as I waited for the c-section and wasn't allowed to drink all morning, just kept going on to my husband 'I'm going to puke, I'm going to puke'. So I had a lot of time to find a remedy, and in the last few weeks puked as much as ever before, so nothing was a cure.

Early on, ice pops, Mr Freeze, sun lollies, etc. As long as I was crunching on ice I felt less close to throwing up. Salty dry snacks - not crisps, as potatoes made me throw up, but those toasted ciabatta slices M&S sell (this is why I put ON weight with ms) and breadsticks. I threw up green vegetables immediately (so devoured the soft hospital broccoli when it was all over) and avoided them throughout. Healthy, eh?

The best thing I did was eating late at night, very very late, just before I slept, and making sure it contained protein and fat, so would keep my stomach full longer. This meant skipping dinner with my husband (which I always threw up anyway) and at midnight eating a toasted bagel with thick cream cheese and a slice of turkey, then doing my best to sleep immediately.

Mostly it's over by 12 weeks, hope yours is gone before that.

Definitely get sea bands. I wore them permanently except in the shower, where I often felt sick (!) for 18 weeks...

Keep a packet of ginger biscuits in your bedside table, and eat one before you even open your eyes in the morning.

Agree about fresh air too, it can take your mind off it if you get out.

Hope it doesn't last too long....

Ginger, definitely. Keep a ginger biscuit next to the bed and nibble it s-l-o-w-l-y before you sit up. (Best raise yourself on one elbow or you might choke!) Sip at a drink - hot herbal tea probably good if you can stomach it.
Then wait a few mins before getting up very slowly.

Dry rice crispies really settled my stomach, and they are not too bad on the way back up either.

Plain crisps also good.

Don't worry about balanced diet when you feel this awful, just eat what you can.

hoohoo, I could have written your post (at about 5 weeks pg!). Am pg with my fourth and am just starting to feel a bit better (almost 13 weeks now).

The only thing I would add to the great advice you have had already, is that you may find that different things help at different times as the weeks progress - whereas I couldn't tolerate milk AT ALL at first, by the time I got to 9 weeks I found that a bowl of cornflakes before bed helped to combat the worst of the sickness first thing in the morning. So it's worth trying things that haven't worked previously in a couple of weeks time. ALso, something I found helpful was imagining myself eating something - if the thought of it didn't make me retch, then I would be able to eat it (and vice versa!)

I know the days will really drag just now, but it will soon be over, honestly! And though I am still being sick now the 24/7 nausea has lifted and that makes a huge difference.

All the best x x x
