Pregnancy weight gain

Before I was pregnant I weighed around 9st 10lbs, but went down to 9st 5lbs by the end of the first trimester due to sickness. I'm now 19 weeks and weigh 10st 1lb.

When trying to figure out whether I'm in the healthy range for weight gain then do I work it out from my pre-conception weight or my lower weight? If I use my pre-conception weight then I've apparently not put on enough, and if I use my sickness-induced lower weight then it seems like I've put on way too much?

I sometimes suffer from sciatica and a clicky hip so I don't want to put on too much too quickly so I can avoid any sudden stress to my hips. This is purely just curiosity and I know that I've probably nothing to be concerned about, but I'm trying to work out whether I'm plodding along in the healthy range so far or whether I need to put more on/put it on slower.

  • Sorry that was meant to say ''by the middle of first trimester" not the end (weighed myself at approx 8 or 9 weeks, then not again until 17 weeks)

I think it's based on pre-pregnancy but like you I also lose a fair bit during first trimester, so was 20 something weeks before starting to gain on pre-pregnancy weight. Now 36 weeks and a good 1.5 stone above pre-pregnancy and 2 stone above what I was at 12 weeks. Nothing to worry about its only a guide as long as baby is growing fine on scans/bump measurement from 24/28 weeks.

I really wouldn't worry about it if I were you. Unless you are very short you don't sound like you are in any way overweight and my consultant said that if you are of average weight then you're likely to gain more weight than someone like me a big fat heffer

I'm 5ft 3" BMI was 22 I think. I don't seem to be gaining weight anywhere else yet, just in a solid round ball stuck on my front and huge boobs (for me anyway, I'm used to my modest 34B), so I'm probably good.

I did ask my midwife but she just said ''you look great'' which, whilst very very untrue lovely, didn't really answer my question!
