blood pressure-how high is too high?

Hello.
I'm 40+5 weeks. I woke up early this morning with a splitting headache.
At my m/w appointment on Wed my m/w noticed my bp was up.(I'm usually 110/60) I was 147/84) I had a suspected rupture of membranes so she suggested I go to hospital to get checked out and didn't do bp again cos they would do it as hosp. They did. it was 120/74 (after a half an hour of lying on a bed waiting for waters to "pool".)

So today i decided to do a quick check of bp and the systolic was consistantly 137 or 138 over 83 or 84. Then it went up to 147/84 and again about a half an hour 147/84.

I put the first reading down to not having sat down so I took the others having rested for 20 mins at least.

I KNOW taking your own blood pressure is frowned upon(and I've been told off by two m/ws for doing so) One of the m/w was very helpful and went through all the other things to watch out for.

However,I'm only trying to take responsibility for my health and trying not to waste time and resources at delivery suite.

Part of me feels like being completely NEEDY and just showing up at hospital and getting them to monitor it after all.

Is my bp high? Should I go in to be checked?

Sorry so long. Hope someone out there can help me.

Thanks

sounds pretty high to me, going on your normal bp. mine at normal is 90/70 and when heavily pregnant it went to 130/90 and i had to keep having it checked as had protein in urine as well but i was ok

seeing as it's higher than normal for you, I think you should go and get it checked.

i would definitely get yourself checked. that's what labour wards are for .

Agree, it's not what it goes up to, but how much it has gone up by that they take particular note of. I think it would be good to go in and be monitored just to put your mind at rest if nothing else. You don't need to tell them that you have been taking your blood pressure, just that you don't feel well.

Best of luck

Please don't worry too much. Mine went up too and I was told that they get a bit concerned if the top number is over 140, but it is more of a worry if the bottom number goes over 90. It was only when the bottom number went over 90 for me (and stayed there) that they did anything about it. This is because a rise in the bottom number is more indicative of a "problem" but a rise in the systolic can just be temporary (and can be influenced by stress) - which it sounds like yours may have been.

Of course get it checked - that is what the hospital is there for, but I understand it is pretty normal for women to have high bp at the end of pregnancy, so don't let this worry you unduly.

And good luck with the birth - you must be getting very excited!

hello

spent four hours at hospital. BP was normal-ish when they checked it but they were soooooo nice and made sure I was happy. THey mentioned about the over 90 thing (which i kinda knew in one part of my brain!) I did have protein in my urine so they took some blood and more wee to send to lab, but said they'd only call me back in if a problem and I'm still sitting here on my birth ball so every thing is cool.

Thank you all for your support. I don't know how women coped before MN!
