Pregnancy

Doctor won't confirm without a blood test.

Hey
I went to the doctors this morning to have my pregnancy confirmed. I have had (about 10) strong positive pregnancy tests but my doctor refused to confirm without me going for a blood test. Most people I have spoken to have said they confirmed off there own positive home pregnancy tests or at most the doctor did a urine test there. Has anyone else had to have a blood test to confirm? I am approximately 7 weeks now too.

Why do you need to confirm?

IME you just book an appointment with the midwife?

Are you in the UK? Do you need a doctor to confirm it?

In many areas you can self refer to midwives.

Sod them. Self refer to the midwives at your local hospital.

Same as above. What do you mean confirm? They'd need to do a test to confirm it but generally just take you at your word, tell you to take vits and cut out booze then refer you on to a midwife.

My Dr didn't even see me, I called the receptionist, she booked me a midwife appointment at 8 weeks. They still did no tests. Next appointment at 9 weeks for blood and urine tests but they are all for things like rubella, HIV and diabetes. I don't think they 'confirm' pregnancy essentially until the 12 week scan.

I didn't even go to the docs with my current pregnancy! You can just self refer to the MW. Congratulations btw.

Yeah I'm from the uk. They won't give me an appointment with the midwife without a doctors referral and he won't give me it without having a blood test that says I'm pregnant first. I have never heard of this before so it's got me a little worried. He said its standard practice for here. Iv got my blood test tomorrow so hopefully I won't have to wait too long.

I just called my hospital who booked me in with a midwife for booking in app. Had a doctors app before hand due to asthma and told them I was pregnant and they just took my word for it and put it on my record.

Sounds ridiculous! When I went to my GP I got asked what I wanted them to do and was told I should have gone straight to mw. They did a urine test at my request as I didn't believe my own cheapo home test (first baby) but no bloods til I saw mw.

Your local hospital will have a maternity page with contact details for local mw etc and some have online referral forms to self-refer.

Very odd. 4 pregnancies here, never needed to get a blood test to confirm.

I have never heard of that in my life.

Both of my pregnancies, I only had to tell the GP practice I was pregnant. They didn't require a urine test, let alone a blood test.

I've never had to confirm a pregnancy with a blood test either, and that's 5 pregnancies in 3 different areas. Couldn't they just get you to do a pregnancy test at the surgery - a blood test seems rather odd. I self-referred to the midwife last time too.

My doctors surgery do this (at least they did 10 years ago). I don't think there is anything to worry about just a lot of faff. Although it was quite nice as had to make an appointment to get my results where he told me my hormone levels were very good, we had a lovely chat as I was pretty sick and told me just to pop in and see him if I had any concerns etc.. was great actually as my midwife was shit and I got far more support and info from my gp.

I think it's a waste of NHS money (appointments and blood test) to make you see a gp - presumably you've had one appointment and then will need another? It's self refer to midwives where I am (west Kent).

That's really strsnge as the GP really doesn't need to confirm it and most of the time you can self refer to the midwife anyway.

Very strange - last 2 pregnancies the Drs really haven't wanted to see you as tests can be as accurate as a Drs one (though not a blood test) just had to self refer to a midwife
But if that is what they need to do I guess there is no harm and at least all confirmed - I always worry that at the scan they will tell me off for time wasting in case I read 7 tests wrong!! Grin (I don't have any pregnancy symptoms so it doesn't feel real till then iyswim !)
