vegan wants meat

Uff! I feel like I do not wish to eat any of my regular delicious home made meals. No veg, no beans, no flours, all I want is some grilled piece of meat! Has anyone else experienced this?

No, but it might mean you're low on iron or protein perhaps? Are there any sources of iron that seem appealing to you at the moment?

I'm probably a rubbish vegan for saying this, but if you want meat go for it.

I was vegan, got pregnant, wasn't confident about getting all the right nutrients, and went to being pescatarian.

Am now vegan again.

When I was pregnant I craved meat, in fact rare steak was what i really wanted. It turned out my iron levels were quite low and the cravings eased when I started taking more iron

Yep, am usually vegetarian and meat does not appeal to me, but all three pregnancies I've been like a t-rex. I have been anemic with all three too so put it down to that, even with taking iron supps I just craved meat, it was all I could think about - like an addiction almost!!

Similar - I was vegetarian before DC1 and got massive cravings for grilled chicken when pregnant. Am no longer vegetarian.

No, I dreaded getting a meat craving each time I was pregnant but thankfully didn't. Tbh, had I experienced those cravings I would have eaten the meat, especially as every time I was anaemic anyway.

Oh I am glad I am not the only one.

I do eat a significant amount of lentils almost on a daily basis, and I take iron supplements, so hopefully my iron levels are ok.

Trouble is, while the picture in my head of a piece of grilled meat tastes delicious, having to buy a piece of dead meat and cook it is soooooooo disgusting! Confused

Would a grilled field mushroom help? Similar juicy chewy texture.

Oh no, I had mushrooms last night for dinner and I found they have quite an unpleasant taste. A shame because I do really love mushrooms and they are part of my weekly grocery shop. x

I was vegetarian for 10 years, but when I was pregnant with DC1 I craved meat very, very badly. I'm now no longer vegetarian...

Hmmm.....do lentils have that much iron in them? Dried fruit is good, too- and dark chocolate. Egg yolks if you want to go "half way".

There's some stuff you can get called SpaTone that is easily- assimilable iron (it's actually little sachets of iron rich mineral water)- much recommended on MN, as I found when I was low on iron after DS's birth.

Or just go to a restaurant for some meat! Or buy cured "thin" meat, such as prosciutto.

I think if your body is telling you you need something while pregnant, youre best bet is to just have it. Maybe make sure that its as ethically produced as possible

mmmm prosciutto!!!! I bought some two days ago but husband didn't let me eat it--we had read a few days ago that pregnant women can't eat cured meat.

Quorn could have been a good alternative if it didn't have gluten.

And yes, my aunt suffered from chronic anemia and she used to eat tons of lentils because they are packed with iron Smile

I think the restaurant route will be my choice for now. oh can't believe I am going to eat meat!

I'm not vegan but have been vegetarian for 7 years.

Whilst pregnant with my DS 3 years ago I craved meat so bad and was really disappointed in myself. Turns out I was very anaemic!

I indulged a few times throughout pregnancy and I think that's okay. Being pregnant is tough, it's okay to treat ourselves. I went straight back to being veggie after I had DS.

I usually have a vegetarian diet but I've been craving chicken big time!!

Missing the point here but you can eat prosciutto when pregnant, you just have to freeze it for 3 days first. It's fine after its been defrosted.

i wasn't vegetarian before I got preg with DS1, I just didn't eat meat, didn't particularly like it. Then the cravings started....for sausages in particular....but cut up and dipped in tomato sauce, I even got my DP to eat them in this way so I could watch and see if it go me over the thought of doing it Blush haha it was a rather stranger experience for both of us! I ended up being a meat monster! I carried on eating meat but since getting preg this time (DS1 is now 5) ive gone the opposite way and don't want to eat meat again.

Ashamed to admit it but I was vegan until pregnant. With HG the only thing I could stomach was chicken nuggets.

DS is 8 weeks and I am back to being vegan.
I try not to feel guilty as my baby is healthy and happy.

Yeah, I was vegetarian before getting pregnant. Gave in to the cravings, currently rampantly carnivorous. Will go back to veg after the baby.

I have been vegetarian for nearly 15 years and I was so worried this was going to happen to me! Thankfully at 34 weeks and even with being anaemic I haven't had even the slightest craving for meat, not sure what I would have done if I had!

I was veggie then pescetarian for 16 years. Was fine throughout my pregnancy with DS1.

Then got pregnant with DD2. All I wanted was McChicken sandwiches. And haribo.

No longer pescetarian.

I advocate listening to your body. It needs something in the meat, so you can try to find it elsewhere (can you face more lentils Smile) or go with it. I needed calcium I think when pg. I ended up downing two pints a day (plus eating cheese based dishes). Its weird, but temporary.

I was on the verge of going veggie when I fell pregnant with DD. I had been eating fish or meat only a couple of times a month and had decided to take the plunge. Then the cravings hit and all I wanted was tuna and rare steak! I chose to go with it (although compromised with medium steak) as I have always believed cravings are your body talking to you. It won't just be the iron, otherwise other foods would satisfy it. This time I've been on another meat and fish binge Blush which is again out of character for me as I had nearly arrived back at the point I was before DD. I was convinced yesterday I could smell steak frying in the house, despite not having had any in the place since a BBQ in June... I'm also gutted my toddler likes sushi and demands I share it with her Angry
Let us know if it satisfies OP, just make sure it's a good one!

Just go to a nice restaurant and order a steak however the chef recommends.
I stopped being a veggie a few years before I ttc because I knew I wouldn't be able to keep it up!
