Shall I cut my hair?

Yes, this is the pathetic type of advice pg has lead me to ask for ... am totally incapable of making up my own mind about these things and basically, want someone else to blame if it all goes wrong

I grew my hair from a v short crop in July 2000 until now, just below shoulder blades, so I could ahve "wedding hair do". (Yes, my hair takes forever to grow).

Anyway, I want to cut it because:

  1. short hair = less maintenance in mornings and can get away with washing it every other day instead of every day
  2. it's getting v hot out there and crop would be cooler
  3. I can't dye it but still want a change.

I want to keep it because:
  4. I grew it through several, horrible in-betweeny stages for 4 years ffs!
  5. DH says I look younger with long hair (BIG plus!)
  6. I can do things with it (well, if I could be bothered I could)

    Help?

I wouldn't get it cut short unless you like yourself with short hair. I think I look hideous with short hair and I actually find it much harder to manage because long hair can just go into a ponytail if styling fails! What makes you look most attractive in your opinion? You can colour your hair, you know. It's quite safe. Why not have some highlights and a bit of a reshape. I strongly advise against drastic action while under the influence of hormones

Keep it long - at least you can tie it back if you are too hot - you may regret getting it cut after having f=grown it for 4 yrs! Go for a restyle but keeping it long - maybe a few choppy layers. Not sure about highlights or colour though if pg

Cut it to shoulder length? Not messy to grow out then.

BUT I do have experience of this:
i have had my hair cut twice from long (halfway down back) to v short crop and felt revitalised by it. once i rang my mum when i decided to do it (on the spur of the moment ) because i have a moment's waver...
it's a fantastic thing to do and I dont' know a single woman myself included who doesn't look younger when she's shorn her locks. its men who like the long hair thing.

Get the highlights! Why not? It's totally safe.
I do not look younger with short hair. Remember what Kim Cattrell looked like in that short brown wig!

I didn't think I could have highlights when pg? I prefer my hair darker, but it might look gloomy for the summer. And if I get any paler, I'll look like Morticia Addams

Keep it long. Besides, your hair will become much fuller and shinier as you start to bloom and glow. I usually use shampoo and stuff for fine hair but it's suddenly gone "voom!" and it's really thick and much fuller than before and seems to be easier to style. flicks hair in the style of Miss Piggy

Erm, we'' i had my hair cut short when expecting my 3rd child. I was sure it would be easier to do but it wasn't. I had to spend much more time faffing around thean before. When it's longer at least you can tie it up if you are in a hurry.

speaking as someone v hormonal , I wouldn't go for any drastic changes whilst pg.

However (moooooood swing) I did have mine cut short - from mid back to shoulder and then again to choppy when NOT pg, and loved it shorter.

It is now growing a bit so that when babba No.2 arrives, I can stick it in a ponytail and not have to faff.

I've learnt my lesson from having hair at chin length with layers, can't tie it back at all, but somedays can't make it go right either - nightmare! So that's not an option. Fringes make my face look fatter (and I don't need any help with that), so maybe highlights and layers if they are safe

Don't forget that you look much different pregnant and you may find that a short crop looks really odd - kind of like a pin head on a large body Leave any drastic changes until after the baby is born.

Oh my, I hadn't thought of the "pin head" scenario. That decided it then - long hair is staying...

Right ladies, onto colour suggestions..! JUST KIDDING

Various pregnacy books advise you NOT to get your hair cut while you are pregnant.

No health reasons (obvioulsy) but the thinking (from memory) was along these lines

  1. A (sudden) short hair cut on a body with big bump could make you look very unbalanced - a wee head on a big body!

  2. You're hormonal. You might regret it.

  3. You're hormonal. You might regret it !

FWIW, I had long hair during my pregnancy - which I continued to highlight, and then cut it all off when ds was 3.5 months old - just before Christmans and a month before I went back to work. It wasn't a whim - I'd planned that for a long time, and thought that short hair would make things easier for me once I went back to work - which it did (my hair takes FOREVER to dry!).

Keep it long for the moment - if it gets hot, put it up in a high pony tail, ie off your neck.

BTW - as I understand it, high lights are OK as they don't make contact with your scalp, only with "dead" hair! And anyway, the evidence is so marginal even for "full" dying - it's just another way to pile on the guilt!

What type of hair have you got? Is it fine, "tends to go frizzy at someone just breathing on it" type of hair? Is so, short hair is really hard work then. Needs loads of "product" just to control it. But you've had it shprt before so you'll know this. I'd only go short short if I had a very pretty elfin face (I don't). Otherwise, something like Susan Kennedy's in Neighbours ( ) atm moment is quite flattering. Short hair can make soem people (me) look very very frumpy and plain - need lots and lots of make up to compensate for so much face being on show.

Hmmm, have round face at moment - holding a lot of water..? Moi..?
So maybe short short isn't such a good idea.

Thanks for all your advice though gals, really have to leave work now, cleaners are round with polish and I hate the smell!
