Anyone have cystitis during pregnancy?

I think I have cystitis and I wondered if there is anything I can take for it. Midwife said it's not a UTI but I have burning wee and a really dull feeling in my bladder as I wee. I've had it before when not pregnant and it sorted itself eventually by taking the sachets you can buy and avoiding all caffeine.

We are not having sex so that didn't bring it on. I think it's because I stupidly allowed myself to have a couple of strong coffees over a couple of days. My bladder seems to hate coffee freshly made from beans.

Any advice on things I can take and what I can do? I'm 20 weeks in a few days and I'm having a cervix scan on Tuesday where I plan on asking if they can dip my urine again and make sure everything is ok.

Thanks

I kept getting cystitis in pregnancy but was always given AB's from the doctor. I don't know if the normal stuff is safe in pregnancy but I'm sure a pharmacist would have an idea?

Word of warning though, the AB's always ended up causing thrush for me as well so if you can get rid of it naturally - lots of water to drink etc then I would recommend that.

I've heard bicarb is allowed in pregnancy and works as an alkaline.

glass of water with a teaspoon of bicarb in it three times a day and twice the amount of water you'd normally drink. No caffeine or fizzy drinks. (I've had it A LOT).

When did you last see your midwife to have your wee tested? I went from a wee sample without results and advice that my back pain is posture related to full blown pyelonephritis with bacteriaemia in the space of about 18 hours. Burning wee in pregnancy must be followed up.

A teaspoon of whole coriander seeds swallowed down with water.

Trust me, I was told this and tried it skeptically but it's worked wonders for me today!

I have had this throughout and before my pregnancy. Cutting all the caffeine will definitely help. Lots of water, with lemon helps. Cranberry juice usually makes it worse for me. The sachets are not advised in pregnancy as can push up your blood pressure, as previous posters said no carb in water is good. Relaxing baths help

I mean bicarb not no carb!

Aaah thank you, I shall follow the advice here and report back.

Widow I had a MW appointment on Tuesday last week, and will ask for my wee to be dipped on Tuesday this week just to be on the safe side. I have had this before, again caused by bloody fresh coffee from our coffee maker and even though it was never a UTI they have me Abs and they made no difference. So I am pretty confident I know what's going on and I've got to ride it out.

Apparently caffeine is the number one culprit for those that present to Urologists with ongoing issues according to my doctor. I think in my case she is correct!!

Much easier to get dehydrated in pregnancy I think as you need more water but it can be a struggle to get it down - I get cystitis if I don't vigilantly drink water throughout the day. I find even just drinking 2 pints of warmish water quickly (ish) helps. Gets your bladder back on track. I was told not to take the sachets either potassium or sodium citrate.

Also - no baths.

I would try and see my GP ASAP if I were you. Why did your MW think it wasn't a UTI? If you have the symptoms of a UTI, even if they do a dip test and it comes back negative, they shouldn't discount a UTI, because the symptoms are more predictive of an infection than a positive dip test. In pregnancy the infection can move very fast, so I really would urge you to get seen to!

NotsoHappy I have just swallowed the teaspoon of whole coriander seeds as that was interesting!! My gag reflex was not liking that at all lol

Curious I didn't have any symptoms then. She just dipped my wee and said everything was clear. I assumed that's what the dip test was all about.

The dip tests aren't terribly accurate though, so I would err on the side of caution and go back.

I think I'll go to the GP just incase tomorrow.
