Pregnancy

Could I have miscarried or am I just paranoid?

Hi... I am 12 +5 at the moment but I have this awful feeling that I have miscarried over the last week or 2. My symptoms were quite clear previous to this. I had recurring nausea but no sickness thankfully, a bit of tiredness and my boobs were always sore to touch. I had that lovely 'full' feeling as if baby was settled in nicely and growing away. That all seems to have gone and I feel somewhat normal, like my pre-pregnancy self. I have had 2 scans already, one at 6 weeks for reassurance after a MMC last year and another at 9 weeks after a tiny bleed. Everything was fine and the little heart was beating away for us to see.
Since I started to feel like this, I bought a Hi Bebe Doppler hoping that it would give me some reassurance until my scan on Monday coming but it has made me an even bigger paranoid wreck as I can't find the heartbeat. I'm a curvy girl (size 18) so I expected it to be difficult but I really thought by this stage I would pick up something.
Oh the stress of this! I just don't know what to do! Any advice, I would really so appreciate right now xx

Please call your doctor and get a scan. It's the only thing that will set your mind at ease.

My fingers are crossed for you.

Almost certain you can't pick up the heart beat yet- do you have a scan booked?

The box the Doppler came in said it could pick up the heartbeat from as early as 10 weeks and I thought - great! Worst thing I ever did! My dating scan is this Monday, so 5 days away. I don't know if I should wait to see or I should really go see my gp now. They are quite strict on referring to the EPU and ask a tonne of questions before they make the decision. I had thought about ringing my midwife for advice. I'm so scared to go to my scan on Monday with my husband to hear bad news.

Apparently it's very normal for symptoms to lessen at around 10 weeks, as that's when the placenta takes over. And those heart monitors are a terrible idea - even midwives had trouble finding my DD's heartbeat, from 16 weeks onwards, as she was so wriggly. They don't even try to find it at earlier appointments. Try not to worry, you've had two good scans, that's a great indicator. Easier said than done I know!

My midwife didn't even attempt to find my baby's heartbeat until 16 week appointment, and even then it took her a few minutes. I would advise you to stay away from dopplers, they are on only supposed to be used by trained professionals and are notorious for making people worry.

I had a mmc last year so understand completely how you are feeling. I'm 38 weeks now so doesn't mean it will happen again :) the thing I learnt early on in this pregnancy is that you can't change anything so don't put added stress on yourself when you have no power over the outcome anyway.

If its any reassurance, my symptoms pretty much disappeared completely this pregnancy around 10/11 weeks. The fact you have seen a heartbeat is very encouraging, although not a 100% guarantee it's what you need to focus on until your next scan.

If in doubt, call the midwife or your dr. Would a private scan be an option for you if you can't wait?

But if it helps, I felt so much better after 10 weeks with my first pregnancy. The nausea stopped and my sore boobs calmed right down, it was just the end of that unpleasant (but reassuring) first trimester awfulness.

Everything crossed it's the same for you.

At 10ish weeks the placenta starts to take over and symptoms do abate around that time. You've seen a heartbeat which Is a really good sign and at 9 weeks gives you a 98% chance of taking your baby home with you.

Get your partner to hide the doppler it may say a heartbeat can be detected at 10 weeks but that's by a trained expert, in lab conditions on skinny Minnie mum to be. Realistically you'll struggle to pick one up until 15 weeks and then could you honestly say you'd know the difference between baby, you and the cord pulse?

As pp have said, its normal for symptoms to subside towards the end of the first trimester. And a Doppler most certainly will not pick up a heartbeat before 16 weeks and even then it's difficult if you have no experience. Its unlikely you'll be referred to EPAU this close to your scan, please try not to worry. Its understandable after a loss that you're anxious but it all sounds normal.

Put the doppler away! I know alot of people get reassurance from them but imo they are dangerous for this reason as they can often cause unnecessary worry. My own midwife told me she sometime struggles to find heartbeat and that was at 16 weeks.

It's such a worrying time but my symptoms subsided at about 12 week and suddenly didn't "feel pregnant" any more and all was fine. I know it's especially hard after mmc bug try not to worry and if you get any pain or bleeding ring epu straight away.

Thank you all so much for replying. I'm sitting here at work with tears in my eyes at how lovely you all are.
I've read about the placenta taking over around the 10 weeks point but I never really thought it could make me feel completely normal again. It's what happened last year but it was only in hindsight that I saw it. My close family know I am pregnant and keep asking me how I am feeling and when I say I'm feeling really good, I feel like I am lying to them as I just don't know what way this pg is going to go. I feel as though I should be feeling MORE at this stage than what I do (if that makes any sense!)
I definitely agree with the Doppler thing - they don't make things better, they just add to the stress even more. I wondered if I made a gp appointment would he try to listen for a hb at this stage. I don't think I would get an epu referral as I have no bleeding.

The GP will not be able to pick up a heartbeat at this stage. I've no idea in what situation the Doppler you have can pick up a heartbeat at 10 weeks but I'm a hcp, occasionally have to check fetal heartbeats and before 16 weeks we always use ultrasound. Even our Doppler which cost ??????s won't pick up a heartbeat before 16 weeks.

Grrr, it cost a lot of money. Pound sign won't show up!

Haha Hippy, that made me chuckle. This one I bought cost me ??70 - I thought the more expensive it is, the better it would be. All I can hear is my own hb in about 3 different places. Obviously a case of false advertising - getting our hopes up for nothing.

My symptoms went around then (I too was expecting bad news at my dating scan) and have all come back at week 14 - grrrrr! I've worked in obstetrics before and wouldn't even attempt to hear a heartbeat before 16 weeks as you are unlikely to succeed and then cause more stress! Don't worry, I'm sure your scan in 5 days will be fine.

meandmylittlebump · 09/09/2015 11:47

Thanks Docmcstuffins, that's really reassuring that you felt the same but everything was ok. 5 days seems like an eternity at the minute.

I've had m/c and mmc. I am also 15 weeks at the moment and did have a dip in symptoms (5 days nothing at all) at 10 weeks. I've seen everything OK since.
Contact your EPU, explain your fears. They will listen. They will also have a lot of experience to work from.

i know just how you feel OP...I'm 11w2d, scan next fri, mc in april, my symptoms are not the strongest (thankfully in some ways), had a scan at 8w due to bleeds at 6w and 7w and did see hb, but it's still quite difficult to feel optimistic some days.
If mmc didn't exist i'd be fine because then no bleeding would = everything fine, but our bodies are too tricksy for things to be that simple!!

I'm just trying to stay calm and positive (inbetween boob squeezes) and distracted.
i'll keep my fingers crossed for you :)

Aww 5hell, if only it was all black and white as you say. Our bodies can be amazing at times but really cruel others. Before I had my mmc last year, I didn't even know such a thing existed! I always thought it was like you see it on the telly. My symptoms, when I had them, weren't the strongest either but still there. All we can do is think positive...as the saying goes, think positive and positive things will happen.

If only I would listen to my own advice!

I will keep my fingers crossed for you too xx
