Nearly 2 stone and I'm only 21 weeks!
I really don't think I'm eating that badly too much maybe but not badly- typical day ATM
Fresh orange
Cereral
1 slice toast
Soup and salad sandwich
Diet crisps
Go ahead bar
Dinner- pasta bake salad
Or roasted veg with veggie burgers and sweet potato wedges
1 bar chocolate

Whats going on?! I'm feeling huge and I'm going to be ridiculously big if this doesn't stop :(
Context I only put on 16 pounds in first preg although I was bigger to start with Iyswim
Please help

you see this is why I don't weigh myself during pregnancy, no good can come of it! Do you actually feel lots bigger, are your clothes tight etc.

Your diet is loads better than mine at the moment!
Sorry Ive got nothing useful to add. I just keep telling myself that as Im due in November Im not going to worry about it till after Christmas when the whole world is on a diet anyway!

I wish I hadn't started now I can't stop weighing myself and worrying. I'll probably be the same and starting to try and lose weight in the new year but don't want to feel like a huge blob in meantime.
Congrats twinkle :)

It could be water. But look at your portion sizes - you say 'pasta bake', but not how much, same with cereal and stuff, has your appetite increased and so you are eating more? I wouldn't worry too much. What was your BMI like pre-pregnancy?

Report
goodnessgraciousgouda · 31/07/2015 11:16

Are you doing any exercise? Are you positive this is reflective of what you are eating? No sugars in tea, or hot chocolate with cream or whatever else?

12kg (2 stone) is a HUGE amount of weight to have put on in only 21 weeks, and anyone saying otherwise is in denial. That's the recommended weight gain for an entire pregnancy here!

Have you had the gestational diabetes test yet? Maybe that's something you could push for, especially since you already know that this is radically different to your first pregnancy. To be honest, I think you should start keeping a proper food diary and speak to your doctor. If this isn't diet related, then it's important to know what's going on.

And agree with Juno that whilst it sounds healthy in principle, portion sizes will be a major factor. If you are having a whole plate of pasta bake then that's a huge portion size. Likewise, your lunch sounds pretty big to me. A soup, salad AND a sandwich? From my perspective it would be one or the other, not all.

As a start you could try cutting out the unhealthy snacks (chocolate, crisps and go ahead bar are all unhealthy) and replacing them with fruit or a pot of plain low fat yoghurt?

I'm 22 weeks and have GD I haven't gained anything yet. Look at portion control as it doesn't matter how healthy you eat if your are eating huge portions. Look at things like are you using oil in cooking wedges etc ?
Also between lunch and dinner is meant to be 1snack well my diet anyway from dietician its meant to be a low fat muller yoghurt or a piece of fruit.

My diet from dietician is
Breakfast: two slices of granary toast
Small bowl of cereal

Snack: 1 piece of fruit OR low fat yogurt

Lunch: sand which and fruit OR salad withmeat OR soup with fruit

Snack fruit OR yogurt

Dinner balanced diet so
Meat potatoes veg
Pasta
Rice
Noodles all normal portions

Supper: 1 bag of crisps from multi packet bag or cereal Or pancake

All of those have to be portion controlled

Thanks both will push for test I've booked an extra app with midwife for next week as I'm concerned.
Re:portions pasta back last night filled half plate then salad, veg other half. And lunch is bowl soup with salad sandwich (2 slices bread with lettuce, cucumber and tomoto no dressing).
I didn't include drinks actually which might make a different normally during day its juice or cordial but at night I'm having 2 glasses of fizzy pop so that will be quite calorific wont it?!
Exercise wise- my pregnancy coinincided with my dd refusing to go in her pram so whereas before we would go for long walks we aren't doing this as much as I'm struggling to go for walks in same way.
Sounds like a lot of excuses I need to get this in hand don't I.

Everyone is different, and everyone will have different pregnancies. I wouldn't worry too much, to be honest, your weight gain will probably start to plateau now. However, watch the drinks - juice, cordial and fizzy pop are all high-calorie drinks. Switch to water if you can.
And I have never heard that GD is linked to weight gain, sorry.
Talk to your midwife if you are concerned.

If they aren't sugar free then yes your fizzy pop will be calorific, as well as bad for you. Orange juice is also very calorific, you'd be better eating an orange.

Do you use whole milk in tea and coffee etc? Try switching to semi-skimmed or skimmed.

butter on your toast/ jam? That's calories and sugar and it depends how much you are putting on.

I know how easy it is for portions to get out of control - it's how I gained weight. As for pasta bake, as an example, it's high in carbs and if it has cheese on it, pretty high in fat too.

Obviously you don't want to not allow yourself any treats but goodness is right, 2 stone is what you should be putting on in total unless you were underweight to start with.

I think some peoples bodies just react like this to pregnant. I ate healthily and excer used and put on over 3 stone all mostly
At the beginning. I had lost it all and half a stone more 2 months after giving birth without doing anything. Try not to worry too much but I would ditch the fizzy pop and sugary drinks

I'm the same I've put on loads, was scared to weigh myself because I knew it would be scary but Finally braved it at 28 weeks and I'd put on 3 stones! Really was the wake up call I needed because I have been pretty good since then, have been following the slimming world plan but not too strict, just having 'free' food as meals and snacking on carrot sticks and fruit rather than toast. The problem is I am hungry all the time, and home a lot, so I was really just grazing all day. I've also been making sure I drink a lot, and having green tea instead of normal tea etc. I definitely feel better for it too, and have stayed the same weight now for a few weeks without having to deprive myself.

I'm 13wks and I've put on 17lbs already. I was a size 8 and I'm completely disgusted with myself! I am starving all the time and have felt so ill I've made really bad food choices! I'm going to start eating better as soon as my nausea goes (keep telling myself this)! I don't want to destroy my body!

Wishful - for a start, ditch the crappy sugar-filled pop,go ahead bars and diet crisps, and eat proper food instead. That should help.

2st IS an awful lot by that stage, but what was your BMI to start with? If underweight then that's not so bad as if you were overweight.

I've also put on a lot more, earlier, in my second pregnancy than I did in my first. I'm 15 weeks and have put a stone on - first time round I hadn't gained anything by this point, yet I'm eating much better and exercising more this time. People do gain more quickly in second pregnancies, I'm told, but 2st is still an awful lot for 21 weeks.

Report
Runningupthathill82 · 01/08/2015 14:14

Also, are you exercising? Remember that in pregnancy you can continue doing what you did before. I'm still running and doing circuits and weights, so I'm not as concerned by my stone weight gain as I would be otherwise.

Thanks all I like that you've been frank with me I needed it I think!
My bmi was 23 before so normal and will be overweight now :(
I'm going to switch to fizzy water and cordial now for my 'pop' fix I've swapped the go ahead bars for yogurts and fruit hopefully if I do that and walk more this gain should slow right down (hopefully stop!) as the rest of my diet is ok I think.
Thanks all I need to get this in hand now

Try not to be pre occupied by weight gain. Easier said than done I know . I gained loads of weight, 3.5 stone! And I craved sweet things so my diet wasn't even that good.

I had my baby last Friday and I'm pretty much back In my old clothes already. I would never have expected this, luck and genes obviously play a part but there was no point worrying about the weight as you just don't know what will happen!

I think I'd take the route (and I do) of trying to be healthy rather than just worrying too much... Pop etc isn't great, but then it isn't when you're not pregnant either.

I see where people are coming from, but if I saw a pregnant lady eating an orange rather than drink orange juice I'd be a bit alarmed... Think that's a bit extreme. Unless she's downing cartons and cartons!

Just sensible, as your meals seem to be, and check your extra, less healthy, bits and plate size. If you're really keen I've seen portioned out plates where the division between food types & quantities is part of the design. Pretty neat.

I had my baby 4 weeks ago, but throughout my pregnancy I put on nearly 3stone, right at the end a lot of it was water retention (and not just in my legs-everywhere-i looked awful and bloated). Within days of having my DD it began to drop off, lots of wees and sweat also BF helps, now I have some to loose! But I grew a baby for 9 months, I should be allowed the same time to go back to what I was! I hated getting fat, loved my bump, hated the rest of me getting bigger, but it happens....promise it is worth it :) x

You should cut the sugar and diet stuff just for your health but don't worry about the scales I have friends who put on the bare minimum and then found it hard to shift the half stone they had left over whereas I put on so much weight and really panicked but was eating healthily and exercising albeit eating more than usual, I was just hungry! It dropped off instantly as I said and a bit more, never looked as good ina bikini as I did 11 weeks later on holiday, skinny with huge boobs!!!

Ds1 I was size 10-12 before put on 3 stone and was size small 10 by 11 months after due to so much walking

This time at 30 was im nearly 2stone up but actually it's mainly back and thighs- having had to change the exercise routine due to lack of suitability for pregnancy I am happy that with decent exercise it will at some point go back
It's also highlighted to me how little I ate before to maintain size
Eg before
Breakfasts fruit tea
Lunch- tiny homemade soup
Snacks skinny latte
Dinner-- reg but healthy
Also ate note bread pasta or cRbs generally
Alcohol in moderation

And now...
Oat granola with full fat yogurt and fruit
Wrap (home made)
Dinner- healthy
HOWEVER I also have about a million snacks during day
Without them I feel faint and ropey so for now what will be will be

I think it's good that you've started to make healthier choices, but don't start dieting! See your midwife before you make any decisions.

I've put on "too much" (nearly 3 stone, at 25 weeks, haven't weighed myself since... I'm now 33 weeks) but I have excess fluid, so that's the weight - not really the rest of me! Also, because I've become heavier on top (you know, growing a baby and all that) the muscles in my thighs and bum have strengthened and grown to support me! Yes, I've put on some fat round my bum and thighs as well (i think), but I will need that for breastfeeding afterwards! Everyone tells me that I'm "all baby" and this includes my very direct mum and sister!

So, please don't get carried away with trying to lose weight. It might just be how this pregnancy is going to be. Eat healthily and be active, but don't worry about weight!

For all those wondering, I had a normal, but low BMI of 19 when I was weighed at my booking appointment.

Please see your midwife if you're worried. Ask for an extra scan to measure the fluid - I had one at 28 weeks which showed that i have excess fluid. They sent me for the gd test, but it came back negative so it's just one of those things. I was really worried when I first weighed myself, but now I refuse to get concerned about something largely out of my control. I think you should adopt that attitude too!!!

Also, I know your dd is refusing to get in the buggy, so you're not walking as much, but could you go swimming (when your dp is home, perhaps?) It's good exercise and very supportive of your body during pregnancy. Just don't do breaststroke legs.

I had a BMI of 21 pre pregnancy, I didn't eat too badly, pretty much what I had eaten previously and I gained just a few pounds short of four stone in pregnancy, I was shocked! However just nine weeks post birth I have already dropped three stone, and two stone came off within the first three weeks. So try not to panic and focus on enjoying your pregnancy.

Every pregnancy is different, My Aunty gained loads the first time around and barely anything the second time.

Thanks all I'm feeling reassured- as others have had similar experiences so its not just me. I'm going to continue to cut out the pop etc as its not good but I'm going to eat as much and the same diet but include more fruit. I had fainting spells earlier on in pregnancy and its helping to eat often so think the snacking on more fruit will be good.
I feel like (and have been told) I'm all baby too I've not put on weight everywhere it seems to be all bump from the back you wouldn't know any difference.
I'm hopeful the weight will come off quickly bf helps doesnt it ;)

Breastfeeding is the best diet ever!

Report
applecore0317 · 02/08/2015 21:04

Yep breastfeeding is pretty good, but getting yourself out for lots of walks to prevent yourself getting cabin fever is great too. Is your DD old enough for one of those buggy boards so she can be on ine of then whilst you push the new baby?
