What ones have you heard of?

Had a go at predicting?

Were you right/wrong?

When my cousin was pregnant every week I dreamt she had a little girl (this started before I found out she was pregnant actually) so I predicted she'd have a girl.. And she did!
My favourite old wives tale for predicting the sex of a baby is tying a wedding ring to some string, holding it over the mothers belly and if the ring swings in a circular motion it's a girl, if it swings like a pendulum its a boy, I think I've got that the right way round? I think it's fun, especially at baby showers.

there's a website - might be on babycentre or something - that has 2 online tests, one for old wives' tales, one for chinese tales.

i got boy with one, girl with the other!

there is apparently also an old chinese one that says, take the month you conceived, add it to the month you are due, odd number = girl, even = boy. i THINK i got that right...

Chinese guy working at the tube station randomly said one morning if you have a pointy/front bump then it's a boy. Threw him completely when I asked if it was the same for twins! Interestingly I know he was at least half right as there is one boy inside.

I've also heard if your bump is high under your ribs this is a girl and if it sits low then it's a boy. This one stacks up when I've tried it.
Alternatively, if you have a neat bump it is a boy but if it is more if an all over weight gain then it's a girl. Thus one fails every time I have tried it.

the bump one always stops me completing the online quizzes, as i don't have one yet, just the pre-pregnancy saggy fat tummy!

I have had the needle/ring test done (either tied to a thread and held over bump if it swings like a pendulum its a boy and circles for a girl.) Three relatives have done it and it all said a girl immediately! My 20 week scan is at 4.30 and I think we may find out if it was right out of curiosity now Smile Will let you know if it was true later Smile

I was told bad morning sickness meant a girl - had a boy!
Also told first born more likely to be a boy and last born a girl
High neat bump boy, bigger all over bump girl
Cravings savoury for a boy, sweet for a girl

It's all nonsense but it is fun!

I used the red cabbage and bicarb tests, I can't remember now exactly how they work, but there's lots of info on YouTube. They were accurate for ds and for friends/colleagues who I've recommended them to. I only got a bfp last week so to early to try them again. They were great fun too, although the red cabbage one didn't do my hyperemesis any good!

Leg hair. If it slows right down or stops, it is a girl, if you are extra hairy boy.
I regularly have to shave legs, in pregnancy, I rarely did and had two girls.
Also heart rate. But only accurate towards the end, high heart beat above 148/150 = girl

Mrsdos, what did the scan say?

Heartbeat thing is true. Whilst in hospital waiting to be induced the midwives told the three of us in the ward what we were having based on listening to the heartbeats (none of us knew in advance) - all three predictions were correct

During my pregnancy I craved citrus, didnt suffer morning sickness but had wicked heartburn and was carrying up high and in front. The majority (except the citrus) is suppsoed to indicate a boy - I had a boy.

My Mum also had no morning sickness and wicked heartburn and the last time I checked Looks down top I'm a girl.... Hmm

Everyone told me I was having a boy. From the shape of my bump or my bellybutton, the foods I ate, the way I walked, the most comfortable sleeping position, the way the pendulum/needle/whatever-nonsense swung. Friends did cards, Tarots cards, heaven knows what. I was having a boy. By the time I was 8m pg I had decided I actually wanted a girl.

One day, we left the supermarket and were hailed by an acquaintance. She looked at me and said "You're having a girl. Can I touch?" Laying her hands on my bump she was still for about half a minute and then said "Yes. Definitely a girl." She was right.

She always is.

mrsnlw - that's interesting.

I had horrific morning sickness, no heartburn at all and couldn't stop eating orange juice ice lollies - I had a girl.

It is all rubbish. Including the heartbeat one, that has more to do with if baby is resting or moving around, both of my DS's have had 'girls heartbeats' even right at the end of pregnancy.

All my pregnancies were broadly the same and I had two boys and a girl.

I have a friend who, before having DCs, did some fun prediction game at a party or something which said she would have 3 DCs: 2 boys and then a girl. However she decided after having her two boys not to have any more. But oddly enough she now has the young female child of a relative living with them as well . . .

The ring one seemed to work for me, strangely enough - three times definite, and the last one a bit inconclusive!

I have managed to correctly predict my two best friends babies I went on instinct for friend 1 that it was a girl and on the premise that friend 2s pregnancy was so different she had to be having a boy!!

I am obviously psychic Wink

I remember reading that the only vaguely reliable method is leg hair growth, ridiculous as it sounds. To my complete surprise, this turned out totally true for me. 2 DD, barely shaved my legs, just didn't need to. I did them maybe 3 times in nine months. With DS - needed to shave them every week.

I felt I 'knew' each time, and was right with all three. I felt more or less the same with each pregnancy, slightly sicker with dd2. Chronic heartburn with all three.

God I miss being pregnant, I love it.

First pregnancy: only had very mild morning sickness, barely had to shave my legs (though I can't remember when that kicked in). It was a girl.

This time: I'm 13 weeks and have had much worse sickness. It went away 10 days ago but caught me off guard and I was vomming over the kitchen sink this morning. I'm still hairy. Found out today it's a boy.

From that very scientific study, I conclude that the morning sickness thing is very much Old Wives' Tale but the leg hair thing may be true!

Do you think you might have your rose-tinted specs on, First? I'd kill for a glass of wine, a waistline and a barf-free breakfast. Oh I know, I know - it's all worth it! Grin

The red cabbage test is where you boil up a saucepan of red cabbage, drain the water off, keep the drained water until it cools and then fill half a plastic cup with the water. Then you add half a cup of your urine to the cabbage water and depending on the color change is will indicate boy or girl.
The bicarb test is similar, put three tablespoons of baking soda in the bottom of a disposable cup, then add half a cup of urine. If it froths up, like the foam on the head of beer then its a boy, if it does very little and just fizzes gently and you can still see the soda sitting at the bottom of the cup, its a girl.

DH and I are scientists so we had great fun with the home chemistry aspect of these two Grin.
