Placenta Previa / low placenta

Hi all, 20w scan showed low placenta but they said it shouldn't be a problem as it's quite common at this stage and should move up as uterus grows. However, woke with heavy bleeding 20+3 and ended up in hospital for a couple of days. Home now and just dark spotting so seems to have sorted itself. I didn't have any scans or exams in hospital as they suspect it's the low placenta and don't want to aggravate it. Just said take it easy, no sex and come straight back if it starts again. Booked a few days off work as my office is on 3rd floor with no lift, cancelled yoga for next few weeks, not doing hoovering etc.

So, wondering if anyone's had similar and if the placenta moved up after a bleed, or if the bleed means its likely to stay low?

Grateful for any do's / don'ts too to avoid repeat episodes.

Thank you!

Well apparently they do move but mine didn't and caused bleeding even tho was only grade 2... Bleeds at 20 weeks, 27 weeks, 31 weeks, 33 weeks, delivered at 34+2 by cs after bleeds got too heavy. He was all fine though. It can really go either way! It seems like the majority do move- I trawled for other stories when I was in your position!

The bleed doesn't affect whether or not it stays low.

I had a complete Grade 4 previa with no bleeds at all, so there aren't always complications. I would advise you to take it very easy though, bleeds can be very serious and it's not worth the risk. Is your job strenuous? If it is in any way then I'd consider more than a few days off, speak to them and arrange light duties for a while. Do as little as you can get away with until your next scan and then you may well see some improvement. I think something like 90% of low placentas move up so you're very likely to be fine.

Thanks cath and Rhiannon, desk based mostly but will see if I can get colleagues to run up and down stairs for files I think (some can be quite heavy). Fingers crossed it does move, good to know bleed doesn't necessarily mean it won't.
