20 week scan - short nose bone

We had our 20 week scan yesterday and baby's short nose bone was flagged (it was 4.1mm and hospital's threshold is 5mm) for referral to a consultant.

Consultant has advised that its likely baby is fine (rest of scan was normal) but there is a risk that it signifies a chromosomal abnormality such as Down's or something else.

The NHS's combined test at 12 weeks gave me a Down's risk of 1 in 148 but we had the private Harmony test which gave me a risk of 1 in 10,000.

We've turned down an amnio because of the miscarriage risk.

Can anyone offer any reassuring similar experiences??

I don't have any direct experience, but what sort of noses do you and your dp have?

Ds1 had short leg measurements in comparison to the rest of his body, but both me and dp have short legs and long bodies so it was just a combination of our genes.

It must be worrying for you, I hope you get a time with the consultant soon.

The harmony test is very accurate, much more so than ultrasound markers

I think you have no grounds to worry (I know test is easier said than done though)

Thanks BatteryPoweredHen - I'm trying to focus on the Harmony test result.

We had a few soft markers, white balls in the brain and heart combined with bright white bowel. We refused amino due to a previous late miscarriage but markers were still visible on scans until he was born. It turned out that he was totally fine but it was a scary few months.

Yeah the ultrasound is a first-flag thing, the harmony is the more accurate one recommend if there's an anomaly. Plus the consultant said the same as the harmony.

My friend was told her son had bony protrusions on his forehead and nose amongst other issues at his 20 week scan ... He was born when due totally perfect though she spent months worrying he would arrive with horns and such!
I'm sure your little one is just perfect and it might just mean you get an extra peek in on him/her in a few weeks time :)
