Can't stop coughing - please any tips?

I've had a cold for 10 days, for the last 5 it's involved a horrible cough, pretty dry ish but really deep, sounds like a long bark / cow even. In the day I cough but feel mostly ok. As soon as I go to bed (in fact in the evening) it's worse I am literally coughing constantly in fits of coughing.

I went to the docs on Monday who said they can't help (27wks pregnant) but to keep up steaming and droning water (which I am of course)

Last night I went to bed at 11pm. Was awake coughing constantly until 1.30am so much it hurts my stomach because of the use of muscles (ha ha don't get much use!) I was sat up mostly so it's not all about being laid down. I then woke for 1.5hrs at 4am to do the same and now at 7 to get up with DD1.

Can anyone offer any suggestions of how I can get this thing to F off? I've had enough of it! We are staying at my in laws this eve and I know I will keep the whole house awake it's so bad (DH been in spare room) but I don't know what I can do.

I don't generally drink in pregnancy but DH suggested a hot toddy last night. I didn't have one but considered it as feel a bit desperate to be honest. If anything it's getting more annoying and worse not better and I am shattered!!

Anyone have any wonderful home made remedies?!

I've had a cough and cold for the past couple of weeks. The pharmacist said I can have simple linctus which helped a little bit. I've also been drinking hot water with honey and lemon. I'm still full of cold but the cough has eased a little bit. Maybe go to the pharmacist and ask them if there's anything else you can take?

Honey and lemon in hot water really breaks a cough up.

Vicks in the bottom of the feet then socks on helps at night. Get well soon x

Poor you, try going into a bathroom, a small ensuite is ideal if you have one. Shut the door and or windows and run the bath or shower as hot as you can. keep the fan off and within minutes it will become a damp foggy sauna. Sitting in that condition was the only relief I got when I had bronchitis a few years ago. It makes your cough easier and lubricates everything so anythign that needs coughed up will be.

Make sure you sleep as upright as possible and have a bowl of water next to radiator as central heating can make a cough worse.

Hope you feel better. A bad cough is hellish.

I find homeopathic remedies really helpful.Had a bad cough & cold. Small balls you suck based on onion extract helped with cold and runny nose and tablets you suck called Rhinallergy eased the cough.

Homeopathy is sugar pills.

I feel for you OP. It's really miserable even when you can take meds. I've had such severe coughs I've been worried I'd cough the baby out. Fortunately, this hasn't happened yet Smile

Throat irritation is the worst thing, so lots of hot soothing drinks to ward it off.

Me too! I caught a coldy cough about 6 weeks ago (led to a perforated eardrum and losing my hearing) and while most of it is gone, I still find I cough in the mornings.

This is just my own theory but I read that oestrogen can increase mucous secretions, particularly in your nose - I wonder if this applies to the lungs too? It would make sense for my cough because I figure if I'm lying down stationery all night, it'll build up by the morning and make me cough. Is this true of your cough too?

I sympathise, when it was really bad a few weeks ago I barely got a wink of sleep. I hope you feel better soon!

I second the honey and lemon. I find it soothes my throat when it feels raw from all the coughing.

I had a terrible cough/cold in the summer. Was mixing cinnamon into the mix as well.

And paracetamol, vit c, gallons of water and putting shower on and letting the steam build up before sitting in it for a wee while.

Hope you feel better soon

Cough medicine? I've found it pretty effective and it doesn't say not to take it when pregnant

I've had the same thing for about 3 weeks now and it's been driving me bonkers too! At night I now use a humidifier (can buy one from Boots or Neals Yard) with Olbas oil drops in it- this really does help as dry air makes the coughing so much worse! Also paracetamol at night seems to help...

Avoid drinking any cold water s this sets off coughing fits - so lots of herbal teas with honey in are best.

You have my sympathy - it's taking me forever to shift this cold and im worried I'm holding up the birth (I'm 39 weeks) as I've been told the bsby will wait until I'm 100% again before making an appearance!
