Coccix/tailbone pain anyone?

I'm 13+2 and for the past couple of days my coccix feels bruised - it hurts when I walk and when I sit down, unless I lean right forward. I don't remember banging it and googling suggests this is a pregnancy thing. Great Hmm

So, anyone else have or had this? Did it go away or get worse?
Anything that helps?

Thanks!

Yes I have suffered with this the whole way along (I'm now 29+4) afraid to say that I haven't found anything that really helps

Yes - though I think you're unlucky to have it so early (mine didn't start till partway through the 2nd trimester).

I found that doing pilates-type exercises where you push the pelvis forward and then back several times helps a little bit. You could try yoga cat stretches too. Warm baths are good too, and getting DP to rub it gently. None of these made it go away, but did temporarily alleviate it.

The good news is that for me at any rate it comes and goes, and I think it depends on how the baby is lying. So at the weekend it was awful, for example, but the last few days have been a lot better. So it might go away for you, at least for a while.

I had it really bad, especially around 20 weeks. Now 38 weeks and it's gone, not felt it for a few weeks thankfully. Sitting on birth ball and swimming helped, as well as cold compresses.

Ah bugger, sounds like it's here to stay then. Baby is only about 8cm at this stage so can't believe a change of position on the baby's part will help...!

I didn't have it at all last pregnancy so it's a bit of an unwelcome surprise. I did have hip pain though so maybe it's just a different version of the same thing.

Funnily enough I got in the bath (with dd Blush) earlier and it did help. Will try the pilates/yoga cat pelvis stretches, I know what you mean. Thanks.

Sorry you have all suffered too!

I also use a hot wheat bag at night and avoid any hard chairs and use a lumber support when driving as the pain does seemed to be linked to hip pain. It comes and goes though so hopefully you will get some rest from it.

Anyone tried one of those cushions with a hole in it? I could probably get one of those at work (desk job so lots of sitting) so wondered if it might help. I could also get a lumbar support I think, thanks for the tip.

I also had this for the whole pregnancy, from very early on (about 8/9 weeks I think). It never got very bad and I just kind got used to it and adapted how I sat and moved. Sorry I can't help with options for you now, but wanted to reassure you that it completely disappeared after birth.

I have one of those hole cushions but I don't like it, its quite hard and just kind of moves the pain.
try out a few diff chairs at work, finding a comfy chair has made the biggest doffence for me, if its a big employer it may be worth asking safety or HR if you can trail some chairs from your office supplier as you may be able to get a loan one for a few months.

Thanks both. It seems better today. Yes, big employer, and there are a few styles of chair floating around so I could trial a few in theory (though it's notoriously hard to actually find any spares!)

Your pregnant ans they have a duty of care you should be amazed what safety can lay their hands on.

Yoga helps. I had 7 sessions and then something clicked in my back and the pain vanished. It builds up again, I do a few yoga poses and it clicks again. I've also been using my yoga cushion for everyday sitting. It's a sloping cushion, but it makes me sit up straight with both feet on the floor.

I damaged my coccyx in my first pregnancy 6 y ago. Recently had it injected as it won't heal. You definitely need a cut out cushion on a hard chair. Free the bone from all pressure so the inflammation goes down. Soft chairs are the worst as you sink in rather than sitting off it. If you commute by train try & stand as the vibrations are dreadful for it. You have my sympathy.

I had it really bad starting with before I knew I was pregnant! Then it suddenly stopped in the second trimester. Then came back at about week 23 for a few days then stopped again. I'm 27 weeks pregnant now so I'm guessing I'll probably get it again before the end. But I think it must be a pregnant thing as I haven't hurt my back at all.

Coccyx pain is something I have suffered with my whole life, now I'm pregnant too it seems to come and go at random but in the past I have narrowed it down to 2 specific things that trigger it. 1. sitting too much 2. dehydration/constipation. Both of which you have more of when you're pregnant so that would explain why a lot of pregnant women get it. It's like I get cramp in my coccix and when I have an attack the pain can be so intense I almost pass out, but I have come up with a few strategies to deal with it:
First drink a whole pint of water immediately! sometimes this can be enough to stop it in seconds. sit on the loo and try to consentrate very hard on relaxing the muscles around your pelvic floor, lower back, belly and bum, most of the pain is cramp and if you can force the muscles to relax it will go away. but this is difficult when you're in pain. Finally if that doesnt help sit on a cricket ball!! Yes seriously! It works on the same principal a pressure point relieving muscle spasms in the gym with a foam roller, you either lay down on the floor or sit on a hard surface and roll the ball under your bum until you find the bit that hurts the most and gently apply pressure, it will hurt but it you stay with it for a minute or so, eventually the muscles will relax and you will feel better. Then try not to sit down too much and stay hydrated.
