Do you have something to nibble before you get out of bed? I found that if I ate a biscuit of something before I started moving about in the morning it helped.

Hello Meggievache. I tried all of that, and acupuncture. I am now taking ondansetron prescribed by me GP, which enables me to get up and out of bed, but not much else, so for me that is progress. Have had hyperemesis with 2 pregnancies and ended up on a drip both times, so this time I would say the drugs are definitely working. I know people don't always approve of taking them while pregnant, but to be honest it was take the pills or have a termination. BTW, have also tried stemetil (oral, rectal, injection and dissolve in the mouth), phenergan and metoclorpromide (sp).

I don't blame you feeling miserable, pregnancy sickness is absolutely horrible.

Also, I tried the 'morning well' cd. Unfortunately, I was really sick while listening to it! But it has had very good reviews.

oddly enough I found constant eating of small bland things helped, getting an empty stomach only made it worse. Ditto the seasick bands and coke helped settle my stomach. HTH

Agree with Anniediv - watch you don't get dehydrated and if there's any danger of it, go to the doctor and demand drugs. Also rest as much as is humanly possible, even if it means taking time off work/getting help with existing children. If people aren't helpful enough point out that if it is allowed to escalate you may well end up in hospital. Good luck!

The only thing that helped in both my pregnancies was oranges/satsumas or sometimes an apple and rich tea biscuits.
I'd stick the sickness bands on as soon as I woke up, sit up in bed and nibble on a biscuit, then get up.

Megglevache, this is the third pregnancy that I have been prescribed anti sickness medication, none of my children have any effects of me taking them.

There are no question marks over the safety of the stuff that is commonly prescribed for morning sickness - it's just that it's not considered ethical to test drugs on pregnant women so they can't get a certificate promising it's safe.

I see why drugs should be considered a last resort, but if you get to the point where you really can't cope, remember they are out there and they do work

I'd agree with small amounts and stick with very bland, non-fatty stuff.

I had nibbles of bananas - and the potassium in them helped, I believe...

My sympathy! I am also suffering horribly this time round with my 3rd. Drives me mad - if I eat I want to and mostly throw up, if I don't eat I feel so sick! But I have been wearing sea sickness bands the last 2 days and while I am still feeling sick I haven't actually been which is a great improvement. I just bought them at the Chemists.

It is a miserable experience!

Poor Megglevache . How far along are you?

I've been the same, and nothing bloody helps.

I'm 17+1 now and still sick, but definitely MUCH better than I was.

Do you work? Can you get signed off for a bit? I found the only thing that staved it off was lying still, but appreciate not everyone can do this.

Sniffing lemons ? It worked for me but I think my morning sickness was mild compared to some. My poor sister is really suffering at the mo .She hasnt found anything that works either

Morning sickness is different to hyperemesis. You will not find a 'folk' remedy that helps hyperemesis, and when dehydration becomes a danger to the baby and mother, drugs and/or going on a drip are one of the only courses of action left to you.

Hi there,

I too tried all the teas, ginger biscuits etc and none of it worked then one day it just stopped (at about 12.5wks). Hope the same happens with you - if you are about to give birth and this message just rubs it in, I'm really sorry!

Take care!

I was nearly hospitalised a few times with severe morning sickness. It stopped eventually at 20 weeks or thereabouts.

Things that helped a tiny bit were army and navy sweets (maybe the licorice in them?) and sometimes ribena (made from cordial not predone as that's too sweet) but even then it was touch and go. If I just didn't eat I dry retched.

Doctor gaves me antisickness tablets, began with an n I think

I found acupuncture took the edge off it a bit, certainly didn't stop it though (nothing did!). Also found that constant nibbling of food like breadsticks, dried apricots and rice cakes helped a bit and sniffing a few drops of grapefruit essential oil off a tissue.

Don't know if it works for severe morning sickness but ginger really takes the edge off my fairly constant low level nausea - easiest form is in a cordial, but you could try ginger beer or making tea with fresh grated ginger - Bottle Green do a good fiery cordial with lemongrass that's not too sweet. I found it really helps and works quite quickly too.

with no1 - like you nothing worked - I just had to keep puking......No matter what I tried - as you have listed above - I puked.

no2 - wasn't so bad - just had the nauseaous feeling and had to eat all the time.

NO3 - no real morning sickness.

I suffered terribly from all day sickness with all my pregnancies. I always lost at least 10 pounds by the time I was eight weeks. Bedrest is the best thing, but not achievable if you have a job, or other children. I found that sipping fizzy water helped - terribly unsociable because you burp constantly. The dentist got cross, because my tooth enamel was damaged, but, it was the only thing that helped. If I had to go through it again I would use a straw to try to protect my teeth. If I could get to bed by 7 pm, I could get some sleep, later than that and I would be sick all night. I really feel for you, it is torture. After about 16 weeks I could tolerate tiny quantities of boiled rice, rice crispies, dry toast. Couldn't digest fruit or veg. at all. Things improved a bit by 20 - 24 weeks - constant nausea, but less vomiting. Sorry to go on, but what I wanted to say is that I have 3 lovely healthy children - they were all on the small side, but ate like horses and piled on the weight very quickly. Nothing wrong with their intelligence either. Also, I had amazingly quick labours: 3 hours, 2 hours and 1 hour. I reckon it was the very high hormone levels that were responsible for both. Stress and tiredness makes the sickness worse, so anything you can do to enlist support and help is worth it. Forget the housework. Poor you - I really hope you will start to feel better soon.

I always felt that the nausea and vomiting were not connected. It really felt like my body was metabolising so fast to make up for the vomiting - the baby was eating my dinner and my body was eating itself, ie stored fat, so it was the constant hunger that made me nauseous and the hormones that made me vomit.

I found eating sweets and drinking fizzy drinks all day helped with the nausea , keeping my blood sugar levels up so there was less of that graunching hunger nausea. 7up is best as it has real sugar, not sweeteners and tastes refreshing. I couldn't leave the house without a handbag full of toffees or boiled sweets that would release sugar continuously as I sucked. You feel like your teeth are going to fall out but you just keep your fingers crossed that the M/S will stop before the 9month mark.

And obviously as 3littlefrogs says, rest is vital. You're never going to get enough rest or eat enough food to beat your crazy metabolism but every little helps.

REALLY strong lime cordial was the only thing that worked for me!

Homeopathy worked for me and I felt sink all day every day for three months the first time but wasn't prepared to just accept that the second time around.
