Second hand Moses baskets

Hi,

This is probably a pfb sort of question, but would you buy a Moses basket on eBay? I'd be buying a new mattress for it, but it seems like they use it for such a short time that it's not worth buying them new. Or is it?

Thanks, and sorry for overthinking this...

As long as you get a new mattress it should be fine. I didn't buy one second hand but did use the same one for my first 3dc.

I did hear that bacteria can live in the basket weave, so its best to get new unless you know what kind of house it comes from. I've no idea how true that is.

Plus it may not actually be cheaper from ebay, by the time youve added on the cost of a new matteress (i think the cheapest mattress is argos at 7.99) and possible p&p.

Asda sell some for 25, which sometimes go down to 20 in the baby event (next baby event is on the 25th)

The only thing that would put me off is if it's come from a smoking household, or somewhere with lots of pets.

Having said that, I completely agree, they are used for such a short period of time, it can be such a huge expense. I have actually been given one from a friend. I have brought new mattress, but because I know where it's come from, so I feel fine with it.

Thanks for the tip about the Asda baby event! I can't see anything on the website about it, so I'm glad you mentioned it. I might hold off on a few things until I see what bargains are on offer then...

What are these bacteria we are trying to prevent babies from being exposed to? Questions are increasingly being asked about the benefits of the clean and sterile environments we are trying to create:

I've been given one from my sil. I've washed all the covers and new matress etc. Although ours won't be used for overnight sleeping as we have a crib upstairs.

I think second hand is fine as long as smoke free, pet free, clean home and you replace matress.

Gumtree and local facebook selling pages are also worth a look.

muscat - If you buy on ebay you know nothing about the household. Somepeople let their pets crap all over the house, others dont ever clean anything, the bacteria from that kind of environment is harmful and not really comparable to dustmites. Plus there is nothing sterile about a shop bought basket, you just know it hasnt been in an horrific environment collecting really bad germs.

I'm about to have my first and I got a 2nd hand Moses basket and stand on eBay for 99p! So if you can get one cheap enough I'd say it's worth it, we bought a new mattress n have jus given it a very good clean and we checked it came from a smoke free house before we bought it (we have cats so although wel keep everything clean there was no point is worrying about pets too much!)

My MIL got us a second hand moses basket from Ebay. She carefully cleaned it and filled it with new blankets and soft toys. It's absolutely beautiful.

We have one that has been through 4 mums at work! All covers are washable and the new carrycot mattress I have fits it perfectly. Also I have a crib for the bedroom so the Moses basket is just for naps downstairs when he's very tiny and newborn. Have cleaned all the basket weave but as I said the covers fit over the whole thing.

I know it's not really what you are asking, but I would use pram downstairs and hire a Bednest upstairs. I felt the 6 month hire was far better value for money than two months use of a pretty basket.

Ellabella current advice is 'new baby new matress' but it's completely your decision.

Mothercare do moses basket matresses starting from around £10 so it's not a huge expense.

Oh Ella I was just coming on to ask the same thing! It's my SIL and she hardly used it all as her baby hated it. Her house is loads cleaner than mine! I'm a bit in two minds. I don't really mind the money to be honest but it seems such a waste.

I would say, if it can be washed, I would use it, it's not like your buying it off a stranger!!

I used second hand for DCs 4 & 5 and reused DD's for DS1.

I bought new mattresses.

I got the moses baskets for a fiver off ebay (local pick up).

I know lots of people say moses baskets are not worth the money but I have to say we used ours a lot even if it was for a relatively short time each time.

I wouldn't fork out ££££ on one though.

My friend lent me a lovely crib for DC5. It must have cost a fortune and you get less use than a MB because its not portable.

I had the Moses basket my grandmother bought for my mum when she was pregnant with my sister in 1969! It has the most beautiful white lacy lining trimmed with blue ribbon, very late 60s. My mum cleaned it up, washed, starched and ironing the lining and had a new mattress made (one for my niece and then another for DD).

Hopefully one day her great-granchildren will be in it!
