Glucose test - question regarding result

So I had my glucose test done yesterday and first the nurse poked my finger to read the result on a little machine. The result came up at 7.0 (high)
Then I had to drink this awful glucose drink and wait an hour and the nurse draw some blood. I'm only going to find out the results when I go and see my doctor in two weeks.

But should I be worried about the first test coming up high?

I'm 28 weeks pregnant and with baby no 1 the results where always normal. So this is new to me..

Thanks

You should be about 6.5 as a non-diabetic so it's not worryingly high. Think you'll be fine.

Nope, sorry I disagree with the pp. In pregnancy a fasting blood of 7 is high. If the blood test confirms this (finger pricks not very accurate) I expect you will be phoned back in the next day or so (I was always called back same day). I'm pretty sure the cut off for fasting is 5.9 in pregnancy.
I had a fasting blood test (ie a proper bloods not fingerprick) of 6.5 in my last pregnancy and they wouldn't let me even drink the glucose drink, it was straight to bs monitoring.

OP had you fasted for at least 8hrs beforehand? It looks like you might have GD.

Its between 4.0 and 5.9 for gestational diabetes so yes, 7.0 is high and is what you would be seeing after you'd had the glucose drink.

You definitely fasted on the day of the test?

Right. I have type 1 diabetes so perhaps it's different.

I mean, to me a reading of 7 when not pregnant is brilliant, ha ha!

I had this done a couple of weeks ago and also had gd in my second pregnancy. Your fasting blood sugar should be under 5 (the pin prick in your finger) and the one after the drink should be under 8.
In all honesty if it was me I would be expecting a positive result. When they did mine I had a finger prick that came up as 5.2 then they drew blood from my arm (this is more accurate ) gave me the drink and then drew more blood from my arm after two hours. I convinced myself I had it because my pin prick was over five but it came back as negative as the vein blood showed 4.9 as my fasting which is classed as normal.
Fingers crossed for you :)

I would try and follow get a follow up quickly you may find the hospital phone you. They phoned me to tell me I had it within 3 hours. They diagnose GD at 7.8 with such a high start number I would be amazed if you didn't have it.
I was upset when diagnosed but have got into the swing of it now.

It's really different VJONES. When I was pregnant they got really serious (would get me in to speak to diabetic nurse/increase insulin etc) if I even got one reading over 8. After I delivered my gd didn't completely disappear and they said to phone them if it went over 15 and were only mildly concerned about a reading of 29 (they mucked up my insulin during labour).

I had my test this morning so am very curious.

Firstly, I had blood drawn and it wasn't a fingerprick.
After I drank the sugar syrup my vision went all blurry, I felt sick from the sugar rush and now I'm shattered from the sugar drop.

Has anyone else experienced this during or after their test?

missus I think that is a fairly common feeling during/after the test and from reading a lot of threads on this over the years doesn't seem to be correlated with any particular outcome. I have never felt funny during the GTT but have had GD in both pregnancies - the last one I was insulin dependent from 16weeks.

I didn't had to fast.. So I had breakfast before I went to take the test.. I guess if the result come back positive they will repeat the test but I have to fast then..

Is it true that when you GD that they don't allow you to go overdue

In my area they will induce at 39 weeks if your diet controlled or 38 weeks if your on insulin

hartmel did you tell them you had breakfast? The whole point of the fasting blood glucose test is that you haven't eaten then they flood the system with sugar to see how your body deals with it

Oh I see OP. Are you in the US? Sounds like you had a screening test rather than the full GTT which I, and I think others, presumed you were talking about.
You are right, if you "fail" this one they will get you to do a GTT with fasting.
7 is at the higher end of what your blood sugars should be within an hour of breakfast but not abnormal.

Thanks ladies! I guess I will wait till next week for the results and hopefully I don't have to do the GTT
