Pregnacare multivitamins

Hi

I'm 26 weeks and up to 12 weeks took folic acid supplements alongside vitamin d and since then just vitamin d. I was under the impression you stopped folic acid at 12 weeks but I have just ordered pregnacare throughout pregnancy multivitamins and they include folic acid?? Does this mean I shouldn't have stopped and is it ok to start these multivitamins now? They say any time during pregnancy so assume they are ok?

Yeah - everyone should take folic acid for the 1st 12 weeks, but there's no harm in taking it all through and many of us do. I find a pregnancy multi vit far easier to remember than several pills too.

Thanks Squizita I wish I'd known, the folic acid tubs should be a bit more clear, but I'll start today with pregnacare. Thanks again hun x

Hi ladies, sorry to ask again if this was already covered but I figure it's good to be really sure and as teddybear said the tubs aren't clear. Basically, if I'm taking Pregnacare everyday that means no need to take separate folic acid pills too right? Because I bought both but have only been taking Pregnacare so far. That's fine right?

Hi Burmama,

I had the same question when I got the Pregnacare tablets so I asked the pahrmacist at the counter - she said it was fine just to take pregnacare on its own as it contains the recommended dose of folic acid already. Hope this helps xx

For what its worth re folic acid - my midwife said that up until 12 weeks its for the baby's development. taking it after 12 weeks won't help the baby as its fully developed, but it can help you make red blood cells which is still A Good Thing. I'm taking pregnancare multi vitamins and the remainer of my bottle of folic acid. Got about another 2 weeks worth, then I'll just continue taking the pregnacare. I'm 17+5.

Also, someone told me that any excess vitamins that your body doesn't need/want, it'll just flush out anyway, you can't make your body absorb vitamins it doesn't want, so I don't think you can take "too much". Then again, they do warn against eating liver etc as too much Vitamin A can be bad for you, which imples you CAN consume too many vitamins, so who knows.....?!

I took pregnancy multivitamins and an extra 400 (mg? Ug? Can't remember!) of folic acid during the first trimester. The combined total folic acid was less than the 1000mg/Ug maximum recommended dose and I think was closer to 800mg/Ug, which is what is recommended in the US. Since the extra folic acid ran out around 30 weeks I've been just taking the pregnancy multivits.
