cramps and backache at 21 weeks really worried

Hi, has anyone else had cramps/tightenings with lower back ache at this stage of pregancy. Went to doctor yesterday as I had some spotting too and he said heartrate was fine and I had just had urine infection co not to worry. It wasn't my usual doc and he seemed dismissive of back pain saying it was kidneys, but this is my third pregnancy and I know these tightenings are not kidneys. Have left a message for midwife this morning but I am worried. I thought infections can cause premature labour so should he have been so dismissive of the cramps, has anyone else had this?

You should have it monitored if you think it is tightenings, is it possible that it is braxton hicks? What would make it suspicious to me would be the backache. You could phone your delivery suite at the hospital if you do not want to wait for your mw.

They said she'd ring fairly soon so i might wait and see what she says. I don't remember having braxtons this early in my other pregnancy's, and I just don't completely trust the doc as he says don't take anti-biotics yet, see if it improves drinking water, but in my book it says watch out for lower back pain with water infections as it can cause prem labour, and, I asked about having a swab for internal infection and he said no need, those infections are rare, which I know isn't true as several friends have had anti biotics for that. Should have just rung midwife straightaway yesterday, now its saturday, there's only the medicom number... hopefully she'll ring soon

Best of luck, keep in mind you can also phone your labour ward!

She just rang. Says urine infection can cause braxtons and backache/cramps as the bladder sits right on the uterus and irritates it, but must take antibiotics straightaway as it can cause prem labour! Also, he should def have taken a swab as internal infections not in the least bit rare in pregnancy and from my symptoms sounds like I have one... always worth checking if you feel your doctors not right I guess, especially if it affects the baby, although he's kicking away merrily unaware of my stress!
