Tell me what to carry around in my nappy bag?

Hello experienced mums

I'm packing up my nappy bag (and DH's) for the first time and just wonder if I could please ask what you tend to carry around each day with a newborn? So far I have;

  • nappies
  • nappy cream
  • nappy bags
  • teddy
  • two Muslins
  • Vaseline
  • bottle (if fb doesn't work)
  • camera
  • my stuff (keys, wallet etc)

What am I missing? I can't help but think I must be going to need more...stuff everyday? What do you think?

Snack for you

I'm not sure you will need the teddy. Change of clothes? Changing mat or dedicate one of the muslins to change baby on.

Teddy? Dunno if you need that.

Cloth bibs if yours is a Sicky one like my DC2.

No camera - just use phone.

What's the Vaseline for?

What you do need is a full outfit change for the baby. In case of terrible poo/posset situation.

Also of you are going to bf its worth carrying spare breast pads in case you leak through yours. And a sanitary towel because you never know when AF might return.

I'm a light packer but for a newborn it would be nappies, wipes, a nappy bag (if I remembered), a couple of vests and sleep suits and a blanket. Dummy if using. That's pretty much it. A muslin or two if a vomity baby, if not then I wouldn't bother.

I loathe nappy bags. And particularly hate seeing men carry them - all slung crosswise over their chest!!

I just put a nappy and wipes in my bag. Had a changing roll in the car. I had a thermo bag if I really had to take a bottle but it fitted in my handbag.

I just had a handbag that could take a change of clothes, wipes and nappies plus my usual stuff. Dh may prefer a rucksack rather than a handbag :)

Get one of these from jojo maman bebe. £9 has compartments for nappy sacks and wipes and nappy. Folds out into a change mat. Wipe clean.

Recommend it. You can use your normal handbag and stuff this in. Job done.

Really you don't need to carry lots of stuff you'll never need. Think of your back. You'll be carrying your baby about as well.

Teddy and camera not necessary for trips out. Three nappies, wipes, a few nappy sacks, spare vest and baby grow, spare breast pads if you use them, maternity towels for yourself during first six weeks. Dummy if your baby has one, formula and bottle if required. If you haven't had your baby yet don't worry about change bag for now, wait and see if you need to put bottles and dummies in it. Couple of muslin cloths come in handy, bottle of water and snack for yourself especially if breastfeeding.

I would take...

4 nappies
nappy cream
nappy sacks
travel changing mat
spare babygrow
spare vest
2 muslins
plastic bag
spare dummy

That was fine for the first few months.

2-3 nappies.
Wipes.
Changing mat.
Baby vest
Babygrow
Milk, bottle etc if ff.
Plastic bag to put dirty clothes/ nappies in.
Sanitary towels for you.

Optional extras:
Drink and snacks for you.
Muslin/ bib if you have a sicky baby.
Handcream - you will be washing your hands a lot and they are likely to get a bit chapped.
Things that you need to breastfed eg breastpads, nipple cream. You might not need anything though so add those later if at all.

I always have in the bag:
nappies x3
wipes
nappy sacks
little tube of sudocreme
change mat
dummy
1 x muslin
1 x bib
1 x sleep suit (good emergancy outfit)

  • this is the 'always stocked' state.

I normally also have:
keys
phone
purse
sippy cup of water for DC
bottle of water for me (in outside pockets)
little box of snacks (DC2 now weaned)
If I'm out over a milk time, a bottle with formula pot

Worth remembering, there's a lot of people on MN who don't do changing bags and delight in telling you they left the house with just stuff in their pockets, but most mums I know who don't drive everywhere and do leave the house for whole days, not just 30 minute trips, do need to cart a lot of stuff and a changing bag is usually the easiest way to do it! My only tip would be to buy a big one, because I made the mistake of having a little bag to start with, when breast feeding so didn't need to carry much. Once DC was weaned and I stopped BFing, and I was going from just doing little trips to being out all day and needing 2xmilk feeds and 1x meal to carry too, I found I was carting 2 bags. 1 big bag is better. pockets are useful.

oh and in addition, look in your handbag, that's the stuff you feel you need for the day, you'll need to add all that unless you want to carry 2 bags.

You won't need a teddy, you hopefully won't need nappy cream, I only use it is ds actually has a sore bum, I have used it about 3 times in the last year and a half years. Vaseline? I don't think you'll need that. I only ever took one muslin out and ds was a puke machine.

This is what I took,

Nappies x3
babygrow x2
wipes (took a pack that was nearly finished so I didn't have to carry an entire pack around with me)
a couple of nappy sacks

I have yet to understand the need for a special bag for nappies, surely you can just use any bag you have.

Wipes
Nappies x 4
Change of clothes
Changing mat (one of those roll up thin ones)
Muslin x 2
Water (for you)
Bum cream

I know Bounty is not exactly appreciated on here, but if you get the first two packs they both come with a mini tub of sudocrem that is the perfect size for a changing bag, and you can refill it from a big one when you need to. Think they also contained some anti-bac handgel if you can be bothered to carry it around, if I get dirty I just use a wipe on myself.

I bought a swanky changing bag, but used it for about a week before just using a handbag instead. I carry with us all the time:

4 Nappies
end of a packet of wipes
handful of nappy sacks (for nappies/dirty clothes)
1 change of sleepsuit (took a vest as well when it was colder/LO was smaller)
2 muslins (used to carry a changing mat but a muslin is smaller)

water (vital if you are bf imo)
unperishable cereal bar or similar, ideally something you will only eat if truly desperate, and then it will taste amazing.

I really took the minimum:

Tommy tippee Insulated bottle bag (when I moved onto formula I kept a spare carton of ready made SMA milk)
These are the bags and they just Velcro on to the pram - great
www.amazon.co.uk/Tommee-Tippee-Insulated-Bottle-Products/dp/B00EC6LLQU/ref=sr_1_34?ie=UTF8&qid=1399923256&sr=8-34&keywords=tommee%20tippee%20bag&tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21

Vest and gro

Spare bibs - 3

Nappies and small bag wipes and one nappy bag

That was all. I kept spare change, phone and cash are and keys in my jacket pocket and didn't bother with a handbag or wallet

Probably not related but get white noise for your phone or iPad if you have one. Great job.
