Baby's Estimated Weight

Hi all,

At 36+3 I was told by a consultant after a growth scan that baby's estimated weight was 7lb2... I am being induced bang on 38 weeks. DD was 8lb5 so was expecting anither big-ish bab. So many people have said that the scans/calculation are hugely inaccurate. just wondered if the inaccuracy is usually a lighter baby than estimated weight or heavier... your experiences please! I'm not phased by a bigger bab at all. just wondering if I still need to pack the littley clothes or whether to just stick with the up to 7lb5/8 stuff...?

I think that sounds like a very reasonable estimate and as mine always packed on loads more weight in the last few weeks I actually predict another 8 pounder!

good luck, how exciting! Smile

I was induced at 38+2 as DS was predicted to be about 5.5lb and growth slowed down. He arrived at 38+4 at 6lb 11 so they were quite wrong.

Can work the other way too with babies predicted to be big, be average or slightly smaller than average.

Good luck for your induction Smile

Hi,
I was scanned on the Friday at 34+6 and they estimated 4lb 13, my ds was born the following morning 35wk and weighed 4lb 12
So in my experience they were spot on with their estimate :-)

I had extra scans throughout because babies stomach was measuring big . At 36 week's they gave a estimated weight of 7lb 14! which stunned us considering I still had 4 weeks to go and they were allowing me to go full term saying baby will be 9-10lb. . baby was born at 40+6 weighing 9lb 10. so my estimated weight was quite accurate.

Mummy2pickle interesting to hear- mine has a big tum too on the scan! Also 'long lean legs'! Maybe I will be in for a whopper! Shock

yeah my baby measured top of scale on tummy on every scan but when she arrived absolutely nothing obvious. we were told all along by people not to listen to all the estimates but it proved correct.

I was told my baby was going to be 9 or 10lbs as I was measuring 2/3 weeks a head from about 20 weeks. My dh is very tall,My bump was completely solid so all baby.
He was 7lb 12 at 39 weeks. I actually said "really?" When I was told his weight.

I had a final scan the day after they started my induction. The OB said he would be 8lbs. He was 10lb 11oz.

DC1 was estimated to be albs at 38 weeks… delivered at 39 weeks and weighed 6lbs 13, so quite a way off!

My Ds1 was estimated to be 7lb 9oz at a 31 week scan. They couldn't give me a birth weight estimate as their charts didn't go up high enough. Grin.

He was born at 38 weeks weighing 10lb 8oz, so the scan was pretty accurate for a hippo sized baby.

My DS followed the 50th centile in three growth scans. Born at 40+2 weighing exactly 8lb so scans were accurate in that case. Predicted a smaller one this time but I don't believe it!

Scanned at 34+4, twin 1 was estimated at 5lb4, twin 2 at 5lb8. Born the next day and they weighed those exact weights.

Dd1 was estimated to be approx 6lbs, and apparently had a tiny head.

I started to worry when during my emcs the surgeon exclaimed " this cut doesn't seem big enough" then I was being pulled from side to side on the table and eventually dd was born weighing 9 lb 10 oz!

Afterwards the surgeon said " now I know why your stretch marks were so bad"! The cheek.

Midwife estimated my DD to be 9lb 7 at 38 + 2. DD arrived at 39 +1 and she was 7lb 5. Why do they bother? I sat in the carpark crying about pushing out a 12 pounder after that appointment.

I was told at nct maximum accuracy of weight estimates is +/- 2lb! A lot of discretion there...will wait and see. I was measuring large at 29 week nw appointment hoping just a growth spurt otherwise may have to go for scans nearer the time...don't want a hippo baby!!!
