Pregnancy

night time hip pain 19 weeks

I have always slept on my side, and now obviously do so as I'm 19 weeks pregnant. Also I don't know if this is relevant but I have a big sturdy pelvis compared to my body size and a smallish bump, haven't gained loads of weight I wouldn't say (can still wear regular clothes with stretch in them and jeans with the old 'hair bobble' trick under the bump).

However, over the last 3 weeks or so, after a few hours sleep, I wake with pain in my hip/pelvis (that is on the underneath). It feels like I've been resting on concrete or something: really sharp/bruised on the bone/muscle? Also like it is 'out of alignment'. I have tried cushions etc'. I roll and sleep on the other side, but by 5am both sides are 'used up'! Weirdly - I don't have hip pain in the day.

Is this normal or something worth mentioning to the MW?
Any ideas to to solve it?

Im 27wks now and this is normal as ive been told :) i often wake up with a numb arse n hip before the pain kicks in! When ive used my sides up lol ive got cushions under my pillows and use my bathrobe for propping my head up so im slightly sitting up, i manage to dose off but i cant stay in bed much longer if everything starts to become to achy. Baby makes me breat.hless if i lay on my back for to long hence why i prop myself up, but i always seem to slide down and that wakes me up plus i have a fat cat on me aswel :p all the room on the bed he has and choose me to sleep on! -.- x

Yeah it's a pain isn't it? Ikea have some very cheap rectangle cushions (£3.50) which are a good shape, but I guess I'll just have to get used to rolling over!

I've been like that since about the same time now 29 weeks and waiting on a referral to physio, I find I can have a few bad nights then a few good ones but unfortunately nothing eases it. My latest trick is having a pillow behind me then resting back on to it so im half on my side half on my back. Acupuncture gave me some relief when it's really bad but im going to join a pregnancy pilates class this week as that's meant to be good for it. Mw told me to take paracetamol but I dont want to so will just have to suffer!

Me! Me! I could have written the exact same post squizita! I am going to try wedging a pillow behind me tonight, so I can sleep on my side, but at a bit of an angle, IYSWIM.

That's how my spd started!

I'm twenty weeks and getting this too. I just put I down to pregnancy aches and pains.

I was particularly bad at week 18 and got better for a week then worse again. No suggestions sorry, pillow between my kneea helps a little but I always lose it in my sleep!

I'm in the same boat, started about 25 weeks and it's just got worse now I'm 32 weeks. I can barely even sleep on my left side now, sleeping on my back is uncomfortable and I can only use my right side for so long before that starts to hurt.

No idea how to help it though, although a bath does ease it.

I have this. I sleep with a pillow between my knees and another under bump/bust to try align myself. helps a tiny bit

I have this, it is getting worse but I only have a few days to go (39.6).

Tonight's plan is to go to bed early, then when I have used both sides up (great way to describe it by the way) I can get up and sit on the sofa for a bit with my book, then try going back to bed and lying down again.

If it doesn't work at least it will be a change of scenery!

I've found putting a spare duvet on top of our sheets (so I'm sleeping on one and under one) helps a lot. Hope you find a way to make it less painful Smile

That was how my spd started, would wake with a dead hip, rollover and repeat. Went downhill from there til I was so tired I barely knew who I was. Now sleep sitting up on a million pillows - ok 6 and that appears to be working. Am also seeing a chiropractor for the spd who thinks I should be able to sleep on my side again soon, only 9 weeks to go now.

I had this for the second half of my pregnancy and lived in terror of SPD developing but I was always fine in the daytime, still walking 5 miles a day at my due date (slowly!)

Rolling over in bed is hell as you get bigger. Blah, not looking forward to that bit again!

I found a pillow between your legs, one to cuddle, and one behind your back very helpful in the third trimester. DP struggled to find me in my fortress of pillows… still it prepared us for baby taking up half the bed after the birth :)

I'm having the same - only at night. No pain during the day. I'm 21 weeks and hoping that it isn't the start of SPD.

I had this about your stage but luckily it went away by third trimester and hasn't come back so there is hope!

I have exactly the same - pain at night in my hips and thighs from lying on each side (am 34 weeks tomorrow) - it's driving me INSANE as sleep is pretty much no longer existent. Thankfully no pain in the day time. I've tried sleeping with very shape, form and combination of pillow under the sun but nothing really seems to make much difference. The only relief I can find it getting out of bed when the pain is too much and going back to bed about 30 mins later once it's subsided again....i.e. - I sympathise OP!

yep, me too. i'm 24 weeks and woke up every hour last night. and woke poor old dh up as well. and then moaned at him for breathing wrong. and for some reason, my left side is much worse than my right. I've got a dream genie pillow, which helps a bit and stops me rolling over.

I had the same from early in 2nd trimester. Invested in a mattress topper and hip pain went away! Not a cheap option but it has worked for me and I've been able to sleep - priceless.
