Anyone else worried about being heavily pregnant in hot weather?

Hi, I'm due early July and have been seeing in the news that we could be getting the hottest summer on record. Would normally relish being off work while the sun is shining but already feel uncomfortable at 28 wks so it's only going to get worse! Not to mention how you're supposed to keep a newborn cool when it's sweltering outside...

Anyone got any tips or ideas how to cope?

I was 35 weeks pg on the hottest week last year and went to the pool everyday. I also stayed indoors with the curtains closed. It wasn't pretty

Yes I'm worrying too. Due 31st July. I'm sure we'll get through it, but it's gonna be tough!

Am due in July too. My one hope is whenever they start going on about the what the weather is going to do they get it wrong. Therefore it will probably be the wettest and coldest! Grin

No. Last summer was the first nice summer in a decade. It'll be 10 years before it's that nice again. I'm due mid Aug and not concerned.

Im due 19th July and I have more concerns about the heat over the latter part of my pregnancy than I have over labour. I'm crap in heat!

Im due in Aug and had DD1 in July last summer. The heat was unbearable I hid indoors with the curtains closed scoffing ice. My legs were so swollen I had no ankles to speak of and if I went out I felt ill. My newborn was extremely sleepy from the heat and we had to dab her down with cold wet cotton wool and hold her in front of a fan to get her to wake up enough to feed it wasn't fun. I'm praying it won't be as hot this year and my advice to you is to buy poweful fans before the hot weather arrives as they were hard to get hold of last year during the heat wave.

DS1 was born in Sept and DS2 the end of June last year, my advice would be to stock up on those cool water mist sprays, you can get them from poundland. And you can get pregnancy cooling foot spray from Tesco and Boots which is really good.

Also, lots of comfy maternity shorts and tshirts, underbump ones, New Look's were really comfy.

I had my baby last Autumn, and the summer was ridiculous. I really, really felt the heat, and slept downstairs for weeks because it was cooler. I lived on ice lollies, pints of water from the fridge and I slept with ice packs in the bed - like a reverse hot water bottle. It wasn't the best time... Find some loose as possible dresses, and go swimming a lot.

Well, bear in mind that they predicted something similar last year...

But leaving that aside, I was pregnant in Spring, the year it was 30 degrees plus for two long spells around Easter.

Yes, it was hard, but it's ok. Just drink a lot of cold drinks and sit with your feel in a paddling pool. Smile

a) weather forecasts a far in advance are not accurate so don't panic now!
b) I can remember a hot few weeks in PG - I was desperate for an old fashioned maternity tent to wear, but nowhere sold them. So do look out for exceptionall loose dresses (think Princess Di?)
c) one baby was very small during a hot spell. Just dress him/her in a nappy (but keep bare skin out of the sun). Get a little hand-held battery-operated fan. Surprisingly useful, both at home and out and about.
d) keep your fluids up.

I was pregnant in Barcelona through the summer. That wasn't fun! I couldn't even have the windows open as the smell of frying from the apartment below used to make me heave. I was miserable and bad-tempered.

What helped was sitting with my feet in a bucket of cold water and dreaming of tipping it over the downstairs neighbour. You could always spend a lot of time in your car with the a/c turned up. And buy a fan for the nights.

Put up a paddling pool for yourself and spend a lot of time in it! Wear as little as you can get away with and drink gallons. I also craved ice in pregnancy so I had a never ending supply of that to munch on.

I was pregnant with DC2 in NZ in December, that was bloody hot and stupidly humid. I was also massively big with him (10lb 13oz when he finally emerged)

I second the paddling pool! My Ds was born the 8th step last year so was huge all through the heat wave my other children kept complaining that I was in the paddling pool I had I huge pile of ice pops at the side and munched my way through them.
Also I used to sit outside at night soaking my very swollen feet in it was heaven! I am due in oct this year so not looking forward to the same again :)

Remember Summer 2003? 100 degrees for several days. I was 9 months pg with DD2 at the time. I turned into some sort of vampire, dodging from shade patch to shade patch, skulking indoors for most of the day, chomping ice lollies, making frequent use of DS's paddling pool to cool my feet.

But hey, I survived.

Dd2 was born in Sept last year so I was pregnant in the really hot months. I second what others say about lots of cool drinks and add, a fan in your room next to an open window so it's actually drawing in any cool air at night. I also wet my head before I went to bed and slept on a towel ( I know it's supposed to make you sick but it didn't). Stayed indoors during the really hot bits.

As to having a baby in the heat wave, DD1 experienced a 30+ degree heat wave when she was 3 weeks old. Swaddling ended then :). Fan in our room, she only slept in a vest and during the day only wore very light cotton clothes with no vest underneath and spent as little time in the car seat as possible as they get so hot in them. Also, we had a proper pram bit with our travel system which gave her a bit more room.

Good luck and congratulations!

I'm not looking forward to the commute to work if we have a hot one (live and work in London).

I had my baby in July last year on the second hottest weekend of the year. I was back in hospital with a haemorrhage on the hottest weekend incidentally! The hospital still had heaters on and it was horrible. I found wearing loose dresses good when I was pregnant, having icy water lots and having a fan on in the bedroom all night with just a sheet over me rather than a duvet. After the baby was born we kept windows open and dressed him in just a vest most of the time. He didn't seem too bothered. At night I still had the fan on in the room but it must not be directly on the baby. I had it angled at me well away from him but kept the air moving. I live in a ground floor flat so couldn't keep windows open at night. Good luck.

I'm hoping for a night time birth if its hot. With DC1 it was really hot on the day that she was born, hospitals are fairly warm places anyway and despite drinking what I thought was enough I ended up on a drip because I was dehydrated.

On the up side I find it easier being pg in the summer, shoes are easier to put on, the DC's don't need coats doing up (more bending) and hopefully they will play in the garden while I sit in the shade with my feet in a bucket of water.

I'm due 8th July and have to admit I'm worried how I'll cope as I am really not good in the heat without being pregnant & having a newborn!
I just keep reminding myself that millions of women have babies in countries much hotter than it's ever likely to get in the UK and they survive.
I'm more worried about overdressing the baby so they end up too hot!

Thanks everyone Smile never thought I'd be wishing the weathermen would be wrong about hot weather but have to admit they rarely get it right, just as long as it's sunny once baby is here so I can get out and about with the pram Smile

Off to look for a paddling pool now....
