What clothes/sizes did your newborn fit into?

I mentioned this elsewhere but couldn't see the replies so will ask here. I got advised by my mother not to buy 0-1 months as they can be too tiny for many newborns (mum's were all 8 1/2 lb +). I guess my questions are: What did you have prepared for new baby size wise? Did it fit? And when did you make most of your clothing purchases, near term, or over the pregnancy?

Dd was 7lb 15 (so just shy of 8lb) & wore newborn and 0-1 initially - babies tend to be quite scrunched up to start with so smaller clothes do fit. I didn't get loads of newborn size though and after a couple of weeks she was into 0-3 (she also put on weight at an incredible rate in the early weeks!).

I didn't really buy anything til over 30 weeks and also didn't get that much - we got given so much I was really glad I hadn't gone crazy.

My ds was 9lb 1oz and wore newborn for a few weeks but to be honest bought mostly 0-3months and thet were fine.

This time i'll to the same, a couple of newborn sizes but mostly 0-3.

Mine was 6lb7 and tiny baby was too big! We were NOT prepared at the hospital and my mum did an emergency dash to Asda for baby clothes Smile

Ds was 9lb born and 0-3 swamped him so we ended up having to buy more newborn sizes on day 3!
This one is a girl, so hopefully smaller, and most stuff is second hand. Got lots of next up to one month and a bit concerned they'll only fit her for a few days... Got clothes sorted early on both times and before lumbering around the shops like an overdue elephant became too much like hard work

Dd1 and dd2 were 7lb6 and 7lb13 and were fine in newborn. Ds1 was 10lb8 and not a chance he would fit in newborn! He went straight into 0-3 months and was only in them a couple of weeks, however that is quite an unusual weight especially if this is your first baby.

I usually buy white newborn stuff while I'm pregnant (I've never found out the sex) and maybe one or two white 0-3 baby grows, but I would honestly but the bare minimum as you get bought so much once the baby's born. I think my first has a full wardrobe up until she was about one with things people gave me and presents!

The midwives laughed until they cried at my ex trying to stuff my 10lb 10 oz DS into newborn sleep suite I had so carefully washed and packed - his first act as a dad was to go home and get the 3 -6 month outfit! (all the newborn stuff had been unpacked and washed, so was handed on to friends, unworn!)

Ds was 8 lb and wore 0-1 month/newborn babygros for about a month. We had tesco 0-1 month vests that lasted more than 3 months though! They were like magic. I think it's because envelope necks stretch down for longer babies and ds was never day enough for them to get tight.

For future babies I would have a supply of 0-1 clothes but not too many as I think we had too many clothes anyway.

It should say that ds was never fat enough.

DS1, 7lb3, needed 0-3 right away, as he had stupid long legs.
DS1, 8lb1, was quite happy in the newborn for a few weeks.

I think it also partially depends on where you buy the clothes from. Different shops have a different cut, and fit different babies better. Thats no use til you know what shape you baby is tho!

Dd was 6lb11 and in tiny baby for about a fortnight. Newborn for another couple of weeks and then 0-1/0-3 for a good few months.

Dc1, 8lb10oz, wore Newborn.
Dc2, 9lb 3oz, wore 0-3m
Dc3, 11lb, was wedged into 0-3m for a few hours until dh fetched a 3-6m outfit from home!

My first was 9lb 4 and looked silly in newborns as too small for him. So we used 0-3 months. My second was 8lb 2 and newborn fitted her OK for a couple of weeks.

So maybe the really cheap babygrows in newborn size will be a good idea to pick up for her first week :). I don't fancy lumbering around shopping when I'm heavy and really not able to rely on what I might get from others as most of my friends aren't family orientated (no children) and the ones that are are at such a distance that it'll probably be a case of out of sight... Plus I live so far away from family that I won't really have anyone to send on a quick run to the shops. Thanks for the replies so far guys :)

0-1 at first but within 2 days was in 0-3 cos he was so sick all the time! 0-3 totally drowned him tho so we went and bought some newborn which fitted for several weeks.

DD2 was 6lb 5 and DM had to go out for Tiny Baby stuff - Newborn swamped her.

dd was 6lb 7 oz, but most of that is her head. She was in tiny baby for a month, and is currently in newborn at 7 weeks.

DH and I are both tall so we were not expecting a baby in the 9th percentile for height!

We haven't found we've needed lots of clothes, If you're washing every day or so then a couple of packet of vests and sleepsuits is more than enough. We've got so many clothes that she's only worn a few times.

Both mine started in 0-3 months no newborn stuff at all, they are just a ploy to sell twice as many baby clothes to anxious pregnant ladies imo.

Baby nighties or 'bundlers' are nice for newborns and grow with them for a nice long time.

I had a skinny 6lb 9'er in newborn for a month before getting to 0-3 month sizing, and he was always at least one clothes size if not two behind his chronological age.

I also had an altogether chunkier, more solid but short 8lb'er who was straight into 0-3 and pretty much styed in his 'correct' age sizing, though I always had to roll trousers up!

We got a couple of newborn bits. DD was born 4.4kg (9lb something?) and went straight into 0-3 for a couple of weeks, then 3-6. She was a Michelin baby Grin

Dd was 7lb 4. As whoppers run in our family I was not expecting this!! Next 0-1 mth was big on her, but was fine. DH bought a couple of newborn clothes, but to be honest we just rolled the sleeves up on the 0-1 month. Most 0-3 was huge on her.
She grew. Quickly! And likes to starfish, so needed a little extra room as she really didn't do that newborn curled up thing!

You can pick up babygrows at 3 for £3 in most supermarkets, well worth having a couple of packs in newborn and the rest in 0-3. Dh had to go out to buy the newborn ones for ds1 the day he was born as he was swamped in 0-3 - his feet barely reached the crotch!

Baby was 8 3 but loooong at 60cm so while she was in newborn for a couple of weeks most brands were too short; think John Lewis was ok. Then upgraded to 0-3 but everything was a bit baggy.

6lb 14oz here, but short, newborn was far too big for about a month. We went and bought some tiny baby which lasted a month. Then she was in newborn till around 5 months I think. She has always been a couple of clothes sizes behind.

She was born at 40+5

People also told me the newborn sizes were a waste of money so I had hardly any! I didn't get her into the stuff I'd bought for birth until 6 months or so.
